It’s what comes out of the process of pushing things into piles. Once functions are factored nicely, patterns emerge. You see different ways of combining things that make more sense. Abstractions that were muddy and confused become clear. Y

Hmm. I love refactoring. Getting the initial something that works but is ugly is fun but can be frustrating, and leaves me wanting. Once I have it working, refactoring it to something elegant is a joy. It already works. That was the hard pa

Exactly. Reuse through conditionals is a trap. “Look! I made a reusable thing!” No, you made a choke point. Dedupe what you can, then compose with the other 10% when you need it. No need to complect it, as Rich Hickey would describe it.

But you don't know the architecture you really need when you first start. I think the key is that you accept that this is true, and that having a good architecture is a continuous process that never ends. You build the best architectur

Same. It’s like working with an incredibly smart junior engineer who doesn’t think things through, sometimes solves problems that don’t exist, and then when you ask for a minor change, inexplicably rewrites everything to be “better”. I have

Grid isn't a good solution for this particular problem because the layout depends on the intrinsic size of the content. Grid is good for when you want the container to define the layout and have the content flow into it. Flex is good f

This is sad, but it doesn’t seem all that new to me. As a kid in the 80s I remember seeing suburban subdivisions going up in all the farmland around where I lived. (I lived in one of the first subdivisions to go up.) Each new subdivision lo

This isn't a categorical imperative. This is a decision for this individual situation. By "doomsday" I mean, an economic doomsday for privileged people like me who have had a pretty good ride for a while, not a literal doomsd

This is roughly how I’m starting to think about it. This may be doomsday or it may be an amazing opportunity. I don’t know. If it’s doomsday, it doesn’t matter whether I act as if it’s doomsday or if I look for opportunities. Either way I’m

We don’t know what’s inevitable in foresight, only in hindsight. Sparks of AGI are sparks, and do not imply an inevitable progression to a particular end state. I don’t see GPT-* replacing us unless they endow it volition. If it requires pr

He’s laid out five stages where he says specific changes will occur. He’s extrapolating this all based on evidence from just the past few months. This is nonsense. I’m not saying I know we’re not going to be replaced, but neither does he. F

I'm glad it's this way. I'm opinionated. I couldn't live in a Rails-like ecosystem. If you want an opinionated framework, there are frameworks built on top of React. Choose the one that fits your opinions best.

I think it's trickier than that. People wouldn't trust the answers. At least with ads, you can see that it's an ad. And it seems like there would be liability issues to having your AI saying "Use X product because...&quo

Saying hooks are less confusing than classes and understanding the weirdness of `this` is a pretty bad selling point and easily refuted. Hooks are weird. Really weird. They make all your components that use them impure which makes them hard

This comment seems out of place because most of the article was describing apprenticeships for white collar jobs, and listed a bunch of white collar industries removing their college requirements.

That doesn’t buy them back. It allows banks to use them as collateral for a loan. So it provides short term liquidity, but the banks are still on the hook if prices don’t recover. The hope is that eventually prices will recover.
