While Russian doesn't have a powerful engine as the F-35, their newer planes have twin engine with a combined output larger than the single engine of the F-35.

MR never claimed to be great for all problems. It main selling points was big-data and easy-of-use. Sure, MPI might blow MR out of the water in term of number-crunching, but it is also way harder to use.

Well, nobody should be using MapReduce now, and HDFS now is a lot better than 8 years ago. Without Google using, validating and releasing those design, we might be stuck with MPI and NFS for a lot longer.

Agree. In fact, we have a rule in our team that if a feature is not supported by IntelliJ, then it's probably too arcane and should not be used.

You can't really compare the two number, the Dropbox's post doesn't mention how many disks they are using for each brokers. In your example, they need 16 HDDs to reach 500MB/s, which average to ~30MB per disk.

In addition, columnar format like the one used by Click House can often be compressed even better than row format like CSV due to the similarity between value in a column.

This. Almost all libraries and their example/documentations will be written in Java, so you have to learn Java if you want to use other language in the JVM.

You're not forced to use sbt, it just happened that sbt is the fastest/most reliable way to compile scala code. Maven can compile scala just fine, albeit a little bit slower since it has to spawn a new instance of scala compiler e

Just a rough calculation: Each pit on the DVD represents 1 bit, but need at least 1 pixel to stored. You need 8 bit to store a pixel. So you have write amplification of at least 8 when taking picture of DVD.

Not yet. As the last country to go to war with China, we know full well that they won't hesitate bombing former allies should the circumstance calls for it.

This is exactly our experience. Using the default settings, RocksDB massively outperform LMDB on single-key write workload, because it writes asynchronously.

I have used both Ansible and and Ambari (from Hortonworks) to deploy and maintain our big data stack. They each have pros and cons Ansible Pros: - More flexible - Easier to update separate components - Bring-your-own monitoring & alerti

Honestly, I find Maven more intuitive. Gradle is too flexible, you can have dozens of way to perform one task. With maven, you often search for one plugin that does what you want and stick with that. Of course, if there's no existing p

Imagine you need to ping google.com from mars. The round trip would be at least 40 minutes. Put a whole new meaning into the word lag. Seriously though, the current TCP/IP protocol is not designed to deal with that kind of distance.
