Two thoughts when reading the Acornfile: 1. Ugh, yet another DSL. Why not just use Lua? 2. The config file still looks complicated. What makes this better than writing your own Helm chart or Docker Compose?

Even compared to Golang where you can download a bunch of modules without writing it yourself?

I am surprised that SQLite can be plugged into FDB just like that.

It seems like Elixir is the language of choice for building a large scale real time solution, then?

Has anyone seen rqlite? Someone slapped a raft layer on top of sqlite statements. Now you have a network layer on top of sqlite.

What I am curious about after reading the article is how do they automate the deployment of this setup?

Why? Running HN can’t be that expensive, no?

Just get the fundamentals: - Some core databases. - Compute in the form of EC2 or EKS with EBS. - IAM roles. - Secrets management. - Load balancers. - S3. That’s basically it. Build the rest yourself, they tend to be cheaper.

I always try to diversify into 1 area I am not familiar with, as a hedge to my own career trajectory. Currently it’s either learning Rust or Elixir’s OTP framework.

By the way, if you want a painless multi master Redis, simply install KeyDB. I am not affiliated, just a happy user.

I can't be the only one who doesn't understand the relationship between SQLite and apps deployed on Fly.io, right? Normal apps typically need MySQL or PostgreSQL, no?

All this talk about Java frameworks and no one mentioned javalin.io? It’s one of a few frameworks that makes writing Java less tedious again.

This is such a tiny problem to quibble about. Just create a helper function that indeed force you to return values. The default leaves you room to do harder things like custom chunk streaming.

Rust in Rust is a fantastic idea. I loved it when Go went that direction post v1.4. Not only that the spec will be clearer but you can get more contributors on the core part of Rust.

I don’t like Nix. It’s hard to use. It solves a problem that Docker already solved and Docker UX is much better. And it has a DSL that I think is unnecessary for the problem at hand.

graphql sucks ass for backend and infra people, the people who need to scale it. It also doesn’t speak normal REST dialect so you are missing out on basic things like status 200.

I disagree because it’s 100% within Google power to purge junk websites, see Panda in 2011. But they didn’t want to do that anymore. Why? Because of ads money. To drive the point home, it is not that difficult for Google to have a junk scor

The problem with airflow is its scalability (or lack thereof) and DAG dependency management. Airflow successors must figure out how to distribute the cron and all dependencies should be self contained in a Docker image.

We found the opposite. Setting up Druid clusters is the easiest compared to its competitors: Clickhouse and Pinot. Especially since ingestion goes straight to S3. We don’t really worry about backups (just deal with PG backups). Just make su

If you have organizational backing, it is not hard to use C++ because the company would have already standardized on libraries like Boost and Folley. And the company would already have a build farm.
