I have come to learned that there’s no answer to this “problem”. Even if you stick with tried and true framework, eventually that framework aged, and then developers start complaining that the framework is arcane. For example, how many HN r

I feel like Azure should just give up on Cosmos DB and go all in on managed Citus DB.

The problem with using a framework is that the upgrade tax is steep. Every major version change is basically an Armageddon. This is one reason why micro service design is popular, you can throw away everything later.

Frontend development jumped the shark for sure. Why can’t we go back to the old server-side template rendering and use progressive JS for interactivity? Just like the good old days.

No way. I vehemently disagree. When a company reached a certain mass, hardware cost is a factor that is considered but not a big factor. The bigger problems are lost opportunity costs and unnecessary churns. Businesses lose a lot when the p

The politician is totally a thing at large FAANG companies! It took a while for people to figure out their BS and when it's finally unearthed, two years has passed and they are ready to move on to another team or company and repeat the

The 2 things that makes me hesitant about ClickHouse is that: 1. Data rebalancing is not automatic. 2. It doesn't really have a concept of cold-tier pushed to S3 directly, so cluster management is not simple for a small team. Other tha

Genuinely curious, aren't a lot of time-series workloads OLAP oriented?

What about TimescaleDB vs a lot of other OLAP databases like ClickHouse, Druid, Pinot, Databend, etc.? Or hybrid databases like StarRocks or TiDB?

It's time to make server side HTML templating trendy again. I think frontend technology took things too far. Imagine the possibilities of using HTMX and any server side technologies like Elixir, Go, or Rust.

I agree with the general sentiment of the article. It is clearly possible to write a straight forward Java code. See: Sparkjava, Javalin, or Vert.x. Hell, even Minecraft Java code is pretty easy to read. Too bad Java culture is dominated by

I used to do interviews like a competitive sports. From there I got exposed to so many different (often ridiculous) styles of interviews. It used to be kind of entertaining to play those games. I cannot do that anymore because I have a kid.
