Here's a thought experiment. Lets say we lived in a world without SQL and the default way to talk to DB's was through an ORM.... And then someone came and said: "I created this concise and super flexible language for querying

If you were building a sandcastle, a type system is like plastic forms in the shape of castle components (walls, towers, etc)... They help you create a better sandcastle... This article was essentially saying: "You can remove the forms

I've always wanted something like this to. Only, I suspect that lists are only one possible form of information that needs to be organized. I also think users should be able to shape trees (and maybe others). Maybe you encourage vistor

I keep my code portable to Windows soley for the purpose of getting to use the Visual Studio debugger. Likewise, Windows developers should write portable code so they can use valgrind.

If the time was in tenths, why would you multiply it by 1/10 to get seconds? Shouldn't you be multiplying it by 10 to get seconds? update: Ahh, I get it. You'd need to divide it by 10 to get seconds.

Here's the thing: I believe that millions of years of evolution have baked into every living thing a deep need to work, and we'll feel bad if we don't (because for millions of years lazyness meant death). We need to struggle.

One thing that crosses my mind whenever I imagine creating a human level intelligence is that it takes humans YEARS of constant stimulation to begin to exhibit intelligent behavior... Sometimes I wonder if we'll have the algorithm may

Does it use the STL? The STL will throw. Does it use the new operator? new will throw unless you specifically tell it not to.

Also check out ltrace... Shows the calls to other libraries the process is making... I'd also like to point out that a key to using strace successfully is the result column... Programs that fail often make system calls that fail right

This is a great book for 3 reasons: 1) Abrash is actually a good writer. Sometimes, I read the beginnings of chapters just for the stories he tells. 2) It's full of algorithms. Sure, you probably won't be writing your own triangle

This is a pretty basic article, but might be useful for some. One point I take issue with: a pointer in C is not simply a variable containing an address. It also knows (at compile time) how big the object pointed to is and so increments and
