yeah I agree 100%. Distribution of CLIs is a headache for the maintainer, but it's really important to get right if you want users to have a seamless experience.

yep +1. A lot of times users are only ever going to run a command once. Better to ask for the right information than bailing out because it's not perfect syntax.

Academia is certainly not holding computer science hostage like this. Nowhere near as many people have graduate degrees in CS as people practicing their Psychology degrees.

That's a poor reason. Learning how to write effective technical documentation is a great skill for anyone in our field. Even a team lead should be able to edit/review technical documentation.

We also have some tools we use with the Heroku CLI we will be backporting into oclif very soon that directly addresses this problem node has with distribution. Essentially it's some scripts that let you export an oclif CLI as a standal

In the example, I'm not sure npm can really do much to fix this. package.json entries can have any arbitrary content. "dependncies" might be valid as far as npm knows, and the dependencies section is optional.
