I am also in the boat of wanting to switch to systems programming. Writing code in Terraform or YAML is soul-sucking to me, but sadly all I get currently. I have previous, full time software engineering experience, so I have “seen the light

It’s weird how that happens. I bet a lot of people would choose a pay cut over being let go entirely.

Setup in a containerized environment and with structured logging is a nightmare. Last time I checked structured logging was entirely unsupported. Fail2ban has fallen out of times.

Other than wildcard certs mentioned by sibling comments, note that this is security by obscurity in pure form. This is insecure! You cannot have a website on the public internet and hope to hide it only by virtue of having no well-known CA

Rust specifically isn’t feature-rich. It’s mainly just different.

Just a guess, but perhaps things like the process model. PID 1, fork, exec and so forth. Or argv, or environment variables, or “everything is a file”, or having just three streams (stdin, stdout, stderr). In isolation, all beautifully simpl

Thank you. For some reason, I’ve always had immense trouble with index bound arithmetic (questions like: is this inclusive? Exclusive? Is ..0 a single element or none? What about ..=0?). I have to actively think about these as I do when tel

`envsubst` on a k8s manifest, for templating. The space for templating/dynamic k8s manifests is complex, needlessly so I felt. But this... just works. It has been running in CI for a couple months now, deploying to prod. I'm sure

Same at my place. I think it’s for compliance reasons, but it feels patronising. A bit like taking away the sharp tools so us dummies cannot hurt ourselves. Next, maybe No-Code GUI programming because a real language is too scary too?

> You can't find a good middle ground without stepping a bit too far in both directions. This is beautiful. So short, so apt, so instantly relatable and palpable.

I also wonder. If a child class knows its concrete parent (apart from where inheritance is declared), and not just references it via super(), things have already gone badly wrong.

One question comes to mind: isn't cyclic dependencies something to be resolved at the root cause (remove the cycle)? It's an issue that causes various pains down the line, like type checking in this case.

Interesting take. I find structuring code to be testable to make the code much clearer: mainly, by making dependencies explicit via dependency injection. I do that even if I don’t end up testing the code.

Just the other day I played with qdrant, using its Python client. Pretty smooth onboarding experience. I came across two questions. Perhaps some kind folks with more experience can shed some light on these qdrant use cases. 1. for embedding

Sibling comments mentioned Option types, which are assumed the currently best approach. I agree, but would like to add Python as a different example. Null handling in Python is actually sane, despite there being no Option type. Its Null is

Interesting. Most regexes being short, I reckon that copy is very cheap. Still I wonder, wouldn’t Cow be an acceptable middle ground, “best of both worlds” style (only copy when needed)?

True, but I've been highly bullish on that: if that's a core complaint, it seems one of the easier ones to improve in the medium term. A host of other issues, which Rust notably doesn't suffer from, are almost "unfixable

Exactly. It’s not about asking if Python is the best tool. It’s about looking at the alternatives. Python comes out ahead of all alternatives, save for 1-3 others. And those others might not be feasible for a host of other reasons. That’s h

Sounds like you did everything right then. Started off simple, now your business is taking off, failures aren't catastrophic (they're grey, not black, from what it sounds like) and splitting out a component shouldn't be too h
