Reminds me of UML. Instead of laboriously hand-writing all this nasty code, why not use a tool that can autogenerate it for us? After all, all that’s needed is a spec (UML)! Of course, the spec is the work. LLMs are then just very potent

Couldn't agree more, and have found people in disagreement with my stance on that [0]. Although my context is C#, I reckon it's similar. 0: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35486983

Yeah, the minimal memory usage is actually more appealing to me than the speed. The latter is much more important in reality though, as more RAM can always trivially be thrown at a problem.

I didn’t vote, but your take on Python doesn’t match my experience. Do you have more context? It seems like after the transition to version 3, the lesson was learned. That was about a decade ago now.

My unsolicited, socially unacceptable pet theory on this: that’s what happens when you’re building your 15th e-commerce web store. C# is a great language, but it’s a worker’s language. Its domains tend to not be the most exciting ones (e-co

For me, yes. It’s all very low effort though, mainly pinging WordPress admin paths. I’ve had a public Nextcloud instance and password manager for two years now and am not concerned. That said, I recognise it’s suboptimal and wouldn’t recomm

I like step-ca's approach to this, which is passive revocation. Their certs last 24h. That diminishes the use and also need of active revocation and all the associated baggage dramatically: just don't renew. I imagine this will be

Great observation. Search results for C# are awful. Full of 2000s style, for-profit, consultancy-selling, lukewarm-quality blogs. None of the high grade stuff enthusiastic users from other ecosystems put out. Not to beat a dead horse, but R

Really liking your approaches and wish our code base followed them more as well. Mocking leads to “interfaces everywhere”, I agree. The latter also results from the attitude of putting interfaces all over, even if there’s just a single conc

For the same reason a writer is not and cannot be expected to become a designer within just one week. In the case of shoddy visuals, it's just much more obvious to even laymen if something's off.

I have the opposite stance. Visual Studio is my primary dislike in working with C#. It's mighty, I'll give it that. The debugging experience is strong. But it's slow, sluggish, components or itself crash sporadically; the ext

Static typing is orthogonal to this issue though. This is more about strong typing. Even a statically typed language could coerce values, e.g. the empty string, to a Boolean false at runtime. I agree that that’s undesirable though. Static a

Cryptographic password hashing functions such as bcrypt have relatively low maximums. Bcrypt sits at 72 characters, which if you used 4-byte UTF-8 is pretty short, for example. Bcrypt is outdated but still widely used, I reckon.

You would have a painful time if large but innocuous architectural changes introduced major version bumps. Semantic versioning is how many packaging ecosystems nowadays work and decide compatibility. There is only one question to answer: D

True, I phrased it too strongly. Let's put it this way: zfs (or btrfs, ...) can make for a bullet-proof system through checksumming and self-healing. However, its Achilles heel is non-ECC RAM. With it, at least in theory and excluding

mypy still has some rough edges but in a couple years it’s going to be golden. My Python programs are already always fully typed and checked with strict settings. For all intents and purposes that’s 95% of the way of what a statically typed

I was under the impression running such file systems without ECC was kind of reckless and not a solution either? I recall ZFS being “useless” (not technically entirely bulletproof) without ECC.

One of the prime prerequisites of e.g. zfs actually is using ECC RAM. I’m running btrfs with integrity checks, in RAID 1 so it can automatically heal. Yet it’s non-ECC and therefore still has this gaping Achilles heel.
