When people buy a car they sometimes get a loan from the auto manufacturer’s financial services arm. What they don’t usually get are warrants struck at a penny for 10% of the manufacturer. You sound like you know what you’re talking about.

Until a few years ago most projects at Netflix were done with a handful of engineers ( <= 6 ). A dozen people working on something would have been considered very large. Four dozen would have been considered a company wide effort.

The difference is that in machine learning the changes between iterations are themselves caused by the gradient, in evolution they are entirely random. Evolution randomly generates changes and if they offer a breeding advantage they’ll beco

I don’t really think that it is. Evolution is a random search, training a neural network is done with a gradient. The former is dependent on rare (and unexpected) events occurring, the latter is expected to converge in proportion to the vol

My team bought one of those for our on-call to carry around. I never wanted to let it go at the end of my on-call shift.

That would be a different subclass of anomaly detection solutions.

You are not wrong! An entire subclass of anomaly detection can basically be reduced to: forecast the next data point and then measure the forecast error when the data point arrives.

That’s fair, I should have caveated this statement with the fact that I don’t know much about using the modern AWS console. There are likely a few factors at play here, including the fact that Netflix decided to go its own way in this regar

Once you hit a certain scale anything on the AWS console becomes impossible to use. It’s one of the reasons most high to very high scale companies use something else to manage cloud resources. See: Spinnaker and Asgard for Netflix specific

For those with more experience how does (Num)Pyro compare with PyMC? I haven’t had the good fortune of working with any of these libraries since before Pyro (and presumably numpyro), and with PyMC3 back when it used Theano under the hood. A

Errr that last sentence should end with “is what makes this non-ergodic.”

An example that may be useful to aid in understanding… Casinos are non ergodic. A million players each placing a single bet will have an expectation of losing the house edge. A single player placing a million bets has an expectation of $0.

VTSAX isn’t a free lunch, but you pay in risk rather than time spent managing real estate. It’s passive assuming you can handle drawdowns whereas real estate is passive assuming you think running a rental business is passive.

The whole conversation is very scope dependent. A species can be antifragile specifically because the constituent organisms are fragile. The species evolves not in spite of death and mutation (variation) of the organisms but because of it.

I think you may have misread the quote you’re replying to. You and the GP post appear to be in agreement. I read it as: P(ethical_and_principled) < P(ethical_and_principled|stands_to_gain) Or in plain language people are more likely to d

Oh you’re right. I updated my comment to reflect that so as to not spread misinformation. That said the point stands. ISS junk hitting you will cause just as much damage as SpaceX junk.

For practical purposes does this matter? There is a lot of range between lethal and burns up on re-entry speeds for a ping pong table sized piece of debris.

The point of the article is that the frequency of launches is increasing, and the frequency at which pieces are surviving re-entry is increasing. I don’t think past performance is necessarily indicative of the future here.

The article also mentions pieces of the same Crew Dragon mission landing on the roof of a house in North Carolina. Pieces of a non Crew Dragon mission going through a roof, and floor of a house in Florida. So no, the risk isn’t negligible.

Hey Ghalib and Nathan, Amazing work! Two questions: 1. What is the best avenue for potential customers to express interest in the addition of a new data source or sink? 2. I assume this runs on Polytomic owned compute? Is there a way to bri
