The key is that we want companies for this series that are bootstrapped. Companies that didn't take outside funding to run operations, but either put in their own money or didn't go full-time until they were profitable. Shopify is still a g

I'd be curious what hand-crafted URLs you feel aren't possible with the new Rails 3 router. We've gone far to allow all kinds of hand-crafted urls. For example, here's an example: get 'something/fun/:id', :to => "controller#action" You

It seems you misunderstand how the Rails system works. But let me explain. 1) You can certainly have a paypal_callback method, if you choose. That's talking about the carrier, though, not the action. Presumably that callback means something

What an awesome way to advocate for code change. Very pretty. Unfortunately, I also think it's faulty. First, it doesn't actually advocate anything concrete. There's some hand-waving to Sinatra and other Rails features, but nothing concrete

Do you know who else didn't use to have a popular blog? 37signals. When Basecamp launched, we had something like 4,000 readers of SvN. Now that's a fair chunk, but certainly not unobtainable.

We have a couple of other companies lined up but there's no schedule yet. Hopefully we'll start getting a steady flow of suggestions for companies that fit the profile and do something every couple of weeks.

What laughable and superficial conjecture. 1) It's great that the ideas that Rails popularized are being adopted on other platforms. But besides for Django which has a) been out for almost as long as Rails and b) uses a great dynamic langua

I think it's awesome that you're excited for Rails 3. I'm incredibly excited for it. Lots of great stuff happening. But. (And that's a big but). I think you might overestimate the philosophical changes that are going on here. Seeing pipe dr

This is a very shallow analysis of a fast-moving community, but I can sympathize how it's the easiest way to make yourself content with using the same tools as you did three years ago. If you feel like you're getting stuff done to the best

I agree that gem releasing used to be cumbersome, but the new gem creation process is redunkulously simple: 1) Signup at rubygems.org: http://rubygems.org/sign_up 2) gem build my_lib.gemspec 3) gem push my_lib.gem That's it!

What metric are you using to define success? It seems not to be the traditional capitalist one. The score card for Facebook currently says minus $750M. Breaking even or a small profit is not going to change that. Facebook totally COULD be a

WTF are you talking about? I pay for plenty of services. In fact, I love paying for good services. Dropbox is a great example. So is Campaign Monitor, Zendesk, and Survey Monkey. Give shit away for free and people will take it for free.

If we need what we were going to do before we did it. We'll, we'd just do it then and there. Ruby code is simple enough that the process from good idea to implementation is small. That makes road maps meaningless because you can only map wh

The main speed benefit of SSDs is not throughput, but random access speeds. That's what makes it feel so magically fast. SSD over FW800 still gives you that.
