A few: - Go has language-level support, in the form of goroutines, for multithreaded concurrency. Python is single-OS-thread-only, and PyPy doesn't change that. - Go has enough static typing to help you write safer code, without the verbos

I think this is a little too heavyweight. Since platform-consistent UX is so important, I'd prefer to stick with Apple's tools--at least for UI development. It's usually easy to tell when an app is faking the native look-and-feel in a web

Go doesn't "lack error-handling." They're referring to the fact that Go doesn't have exceptions; you check return codes to detect and handle errors. For some this is tedious, but has advantages (mentioned in the article) with respect to und

"his tone is very well-suited to communicate his experience and insight" I find this statement fascinating. I was unaware that a discussion of, for example, the breast-size preferences of American males was relevant to a criticism of XML. I

The author's technical criticisms are indeed valid. But Linus Torvalds doesn't compare things to murderous, rapist gang members, or offer offensive social commentary on the culture of an entire nation, and I suspect he wouldn't find your co

You're setting up a false dichotomy. There is a middle ground between behaving like an asshole and too much diplomacy. Do you really think respectful disagreement is the same as being "overly-PC"? Torvalds is a little harsh sometimes, but i

The title of this post should be "how not to disagree with others in a public forum". The tone is alienating and disrespectful, so much so that the valid criticisms of XML as a technology are completely buried by the arrogance and off-topic

Makes sense. Better to make more things instead of rewrite the compiler without good cause. I'm just surprised it hasn't happened earlier, since that's the approach many new languages take. But Clojure is pragmatic, so I really shouldn't be

Right. But the Clojure compiler is written in Java. See swannodette's comment on my comment. Apparently self-hosting isn't a high priority right now.

I'm going out on a limb and assume someone has already considered a ClojureScript JVM backend? Or is there some other strategy for moving towards self-hosting?

Sure. I didn't mean to imply that Scala is not used in the real world.

Another indication of how far removed we HN readers are from the real world, where people get shit done instead of argue about semicolons.

I think you're missing the point, which is: this attitude, which alienates 50% of humans, handicaps you, and ALL OF US in the development community, by 50%.

It would be helpful if you could elaborate some on why you think that Dart: - has a "we-are-from-Google-and-everyone-else-is-stupid approach" - "throws the last 2 decades of language design experience over board" because neither of those th

I'm new to JavaScript, but from what I can tell, the no-semicolons style - is incompatible with existing tools - is incompatible in places with upcoming versions of JavaScript - is harder to refactor, since you might need to add additional

So you're arguing that all algorithms on a bounded-memory machine (that is, all of them) are O(1). Sure, but that constant in the O(1) is sufficiently large on most machines that this isn't useful to programmers who need to analyze the run

The article didn't have anything to do with "great" coders. The article was about having gone to an elite university and expecting to do one thing for a living and realizing that the market is against you and programming is the go-to skill

I'm a big fan of Go, but it would be nice to see a caveat about 32 bit systems on the Go website or blog. Or at least some official warning or notice that isn't just a mailing list discussion.

Regarding the title of this submission: as demonstrated by the other comments here, it's good to have some context before you make snarky remarks about the work of others.

I teach a number theory course to gifted high school students. I've been using these notes for two years now to plan lessons and find exercises. Great resource. You can also find more materials for the same course on MIT OpenCourseWare.

I apologize if you feel my post was "Go is great!" I wrote seven double-spaced pages, and six of them were about the strengths of non-Go languages. I expected my TL;DR that I added at the top of the post would have made that point.
