What are you moving to out of interest? I’ve seen people talking of moving ours to Electron which seems to just be more problems waiting.

Well a number of them have horrific bugs in them which have zero attention. At least win32 has an abstraction level which allows you to work around them. There’s a fun bug on WPF and form backgrounds for example which means on fractional DP

You can install the LTSC toolchain without a license. Just not the IDE.

It’s not the environmental campaigning that’s the issue. I am very much aligned with that. In fact I’ve done a fair bit of that myself and you’ll occasionally find me at demonstrations. I think most people are well aligned with that. It’s

We still use win32! (granted we made our own MFC around it)

Keeping CI entirely out of windows desktop development is the biggest efficiency and cost improvement I've seen in the last 15 years. Our CI toolchain broke so we moved back to a release manager doing it manually. It takes him 20x less

Yes. Any user interface toolkit that isn't at least 10 years old should be ignored on windows unless you want to rewrite everything one day.

This is harder than what I do. Just install LTSC Visual Studio build tools from [1], then chuck this in a cmd file: cl yourprogram.c /link user32.lib advapi32.lib ... etc etc ... I've built a load of utilities that do tha

Oh completely. I think you missed my point. Divisive narratives are almost entirely always wrong. The truth generally sits way away from the fruitcakes somewhere in the middle. The problem these days is we give fruitcakes a stage. Or they b

This almost as bonkers as Thiel. Just the other way around. Truths are always somewhere in the middle.

It certainly feels that way. I was there. Fortunately had just waltzed into the tech side of things and scurried off back to my professional career for a couple of years. I watched a lot of stuff burn. It was horrifying. We are nearly there

Sod it all. Just give me a decent email client again. Business instant messaging is electric shoulder tapping and that makes me want to punch people. I literally feel Slack drains me every day.

I'm seeing a worrying pattern in this space. Some engineers I work with treat LLMs like unquestionable machine gods. I've rejected PRs which are quite frankly trash piles and have received responses which are clearly LLM generated

Cloud services change. Politicians change. Once the data is in someone else's hands it is at risk. Imagine our current data corpus in the hands of the Stasi for example.

This is a temporary rollback while there’s a choice to speak against it. Cloud connected doorbells must die as well as dragnet surveillance.
