Yeah valuations are up but the business and products are looking progressively more fucked every month. If there's anything I've seen it's there are barely any people without macbooks coming out of university now and they are

This is on the mark. But there's another issue which is what cripples windows for dev! NTFS has a terrible design flaw which is the fact that small files, under 640 bytes, are stored in the MFT. The MFT ends up having serious lock cont

Yeah that. I had an external "security consultant" (trained monkey) tell me the other day that something fucking stupid we were doing was fine. There are many many people who should not be allowed near keyboards these days.

I can be found around heavy metal shows as well hahaha. I try not to be comic book guy these days. I was in the past. I just want to learn together with people. That is all.

Neither. Just use memcache for query cache if you have to. And only if you have to, because invalidation is hard. It's cheap, reliable, mature, fast, scalable, requires little understanding, has decent quality clients in most languages

To be fair I've seen some terraform fuck ups that that nearly did that already. Fortunately AWS doesn't let you delete S3 buckets with files in them without emptying them first...

I got an HR meeting a couple of years back where they selected me to be laid off because I wasn't closing as many tickets off as the rest of the team. Every single ticket had been through another engineer first and they had failed to r

Nah it's not that at all. Most of the services are totally fungible and everyone has a short attention span. You need to be in a market which is extremely difficult to disrupt and have a product which people are totally dependent on. A

Yeah. Pickett N600-ES. Sometimes I will solve a problem with it just because I can. Keeps the mental model fresh. Mostly just use an HP 42s though. I will note I didn't get it or use it until about 1998.

Amazon isn't much better there. Wait until you hit an EC2 quota limit and can't get anyone to look at it quickly (even under paid enterprise support) or they say no. Also had a few instance types which won't spin up in some r
