An aside that I've been wondering about for a while with FP. I tend to use a lot of tools that do things like cyclomatic complexity analysis, test coverage metrics, etc. It seems like one goal of this style of FP is to abstract away co

Not gonna excuse Fortnite since I've personally had terrible experiences with it on top-end hardware, but from what little of it I was able to play it has much larger environments & draw distances to contend with. The tight lines o

In contrast to some of the stories I see here, in my last job my team had a really strong track record of completing sprints as scheduled, but our product's architecture was doomed to fail from the start (we could've done it but

Used to really like PHP. I liked it because it was my first serious programming language out of college. I worked in it every day at my first job. I followed its progress closely and advocated for migrating to PHP 7 ASAP. I wrote numerous h

They may not have made as much as the Switch + its total game sales, but as individual games Fire Emblem Heroes and Pokemon Go have done pretty darn well (hundreds of millions of USD in microtransactions each). https://sensortowe

Other than the obvious physical improvements mentioned here, consistently the most helpful things to me as a night owl have been: 1. A non-judgemental culture around waking & working hours 2. No synchronous meetings in the morning

Good point. Sometimes I cheat and implement before I test, but often when I do that I'll comment & uncomment the code that actually does the thing so I can see the tests go from red to green. Have been meaning to try mutation testi

Sometimes, but usually only when I am sleep deprived or feeling very understimulated. I also am bad at falling asleep quickly and tend to wake up feeling groggy and not 100% until I have some time to fully wake back up.

I can echo this sentiment. Last year I took a course for my master's where we implemented a compiler end to end. The dragon book helped for most of it but when it came time to implement the assembler we were unable to get it completely

I don't blame them. It can take decades for the kind of change that urbanists want to fully play out, and I bet they would rather experience good city life while they can enjoy it.

I agree, I've mostly made peace with what Go is and I still enjoy using it. It just tantalizes me because of how close it is to my ideal general-purpose programming language. There is a large middle ground between the minutes-long comp

It is mostly an example of the mindset that I think GP is trying to illustrate. Go has nil where Rust has Option. Go has weird not-quite-tuple returns & if err != nil where Rust has Result. Go has no real enum concept, where rust has it

Two of my favorite Perl features: unless/until can be way more readable in some conditions than if/while. Postfix conditionals and loops make flatter code, especially in scripts. Love writing "do function() if $condition"
