Short list: - Keyboard. For programmers not having Home/End/PgUp/PgDown are a major drawback. Even as a Vim user I feel the keyboard is still kind of wonky. - There's no standard for 'cycle through document windows'. Some programs cycle usi

Hah, I came here to say something along those lines, although I know HN is not very tolerating of that kind of comments.

I guess this is kind of surprising/interesting if you haven't taken a functional programming course in university, but as others have pointed out, proxy is just a simpler wrapper on top of 'apply'/'call'. You should read the docs on those t

Well, I lived in Brazil for 7 years, and only recently (like, a couple weeks ago) moved back to the US. What I could never understand is how you could trust a programmer that doesn't speak (and read) fluent English. Not being facetious here

I don't know. I don't want to advocate against Rails, because I haven't used it, but I've used Django extensively and I love the living crap out of it. There was a time (back in the bad pre-1.0 days) where there was an argument about how

Although I respect your decision to go with Ruby on Rails (heck, I've wanted to learn that framework myself for a while) I must ask: did you try Django?

Ha! Me too! I asked a librarian at my university to fetch me "whatever they had on Perl" (this was my first incursion into the interpreted language world) and the librarian came back to me with this. Imagine my surprise when I started readi

Yup, I remember learning a bit about SDL ca. 2002/3 and they were already at version 1.x. I think it was 1.1 at the time, then moved to the all-new 1.2. Funnily enough, it seems to be usable enough that a myriad of projects are still using

What really pisses me off about the Linux version of Skype is that it doesn't support multiple telephone numbers per contact. You are stuck with either using the first number in the number list (not always an option), creating multiple cont

I wonder if you realize that because the Macs have a "tiny market share" (as you describe it) it's just easier (cheaper, too) to produce a re-chromed version of your software rather than writing a completely new interface just for those u

Great, now they just need to update the Linux client to 2.2 and we are all settled! Seriously though, Skype has shown they don't give a crap about their Linux users.

That was the killer for me. I was quite excited about SproutCore, specially after reading in one of the docs (which, apparently, are severely outdated) that "you could bring it down to something around 300kb uncompressed". Heck, even iPhone

Once a friend of mine who happens to know someone working for the CIA said (and I quote) "this friend guy at the CIA tells me they see Brazil as 'the country of the future' and they are doing their best to keep it that way". I guess he was

You should! I've been an on/off Vim user for years, but only recently have finally decided to do all my editing in Vim and I can say that (after the typical initial re-learning curve) I'm more than happy. This article in particular made me
