Anyone who knows enough about the stock market to attempt such an article owes it to readers to educate rather than fear-monger, with wild unexplained references to being raped by Warren Buffett for so much as buying a stock. It's true that

Well, this again is a very hacker-centric perspective. Even if it's truly important that someone be able to surreptitiously copy all of JSTOR once in a while for the sake of innovation, who is in a position to let him off based on that? Pl

This website's bizarre mix of imitation and over-explaining reminds me of some earnest but vacuous manual for a foreign knock-off product. "Press the File menu," I expect it to say, "and a beautiful pull-down fades quickly into view, with u

It's definitely illegal, but some are trying to paint it as not sketchy, in what I think are disingenuous ways.

What Aaron did sounds seriously sketchy (sneaking into MIT wiring closets, trying to download the entire database, etc.), a fact that Demand Progress and several commenters here seem to be ignoring. Defending his actions would require a v

Exactly. Given that Dropbox is still on a growth curve and it's time to raise more money, you can bet that Drew is being very shrewd in maximizing his valuation and keeping from needing to raise another round any time soon.

And more to the point, "do what you love" can save you from squandering that very luxury. I think many of us were handed down an old ethic of sacrificing your dreams to pay the bills that may or may not apply to our own lives.

To pick a nit, I don't think the human, "cognitive" strategy really has any "back-off." In my experience (playing Monorail!) the "fast" approach is basically guess, repair, repair, repair, ... If you're trying to keep a mental stack of ten

Exactly. Be prepared to be bullied by Shazam -- at least, that's what happened the last time someone posted audio fingerprinting code online. And inventing something yourself doesn't save you from patents. I'll be watching from the sidel

I read these papers in grad school in 2007. Apparently he's been working on commercializing it ever since. This guy is the real deal.

He stretches the point a bit far. When he's talking about "isolation" broadly, I can maybe see the point -- lack of role models, mentors, references, people to help get your foot in the door at your first job. (I have no idea if this is "

No one has mentioned that modules/packages hold together code that shares concepts . Surely getting rid of Java packages and keeping the classes would be far less extreme than what Joe is suggesting for Erlang -- yet then we would have

Generalities aside, the criticism of the post stands. It's pretty vacuous, offering no new information or insight. Some writers online actually do have knowledge of Google's or Microsoft's position with respect to Skype, so when they say

From what I understand about Dropbox's anti-piracy system, he's talking about what they do when, say, someone posts a public link to "Spiderman.3.DVDRip.avi" in a forum in China. This obvious and illegal use of Dropbox is a big liability,

I think it depends a lot on the situation. A non-programmer who reports a blatant bug in a "mainstream" app like Firefox or VLC, if they press too much or one of the devs is insecure, may eventually get a cold "you could always submit a pa

Apple's gcc is freely available and open source. If you have a specific reason for non-programmers to need a C compiler on their machine, you can even make an installer for it.

The issue is truly the stupid one you mention. But it makes sense if you think about it from the point of view of a company whose business is "secure hardware" to bash the Square hardware as somehow being "insecure".

Regression tests for a parser or compiler are by FAR the best application of test suites; they don't make a good defense of testing in general. I wish the tests I was forced to write at MIT and Google -- I think I even wrote unit tests for
