That’s exactly why I don’t believe LLMs will cure cancer anytime soon, make terrible lawyers, shouldn’t be trusted for medical decisions, etc. software and maths are some really the niches where we have great, battle tested, reliable valida

To be fair, the AI boosters are saying the exact same thing but mean it seriously. There is no way to distinguish without a tone indicator

Are you implying you would decide to sacrifice citizens health for a few GDP points, a somewhat useful but oversimplified metric that doesn’t reflect anything tangible?

I consider DOGE actions to be pretty much exactly what you describe, with their sudden destruction of USAID and defunding of climate science

The Effective Altruism(tm) believers are part of the accelerationist. See SBF, the Amodei Siblings, Karnofsky (spouse of Daniela Amodei), and people around them

The US controls most of the capital in the industry, including most of the compute used for training. And also, NVIDIA, arguably the most important actor in the industry

I’ve been at multiple hackathons over the past 15y that rewarded impractical or copies of existing products. And I think that’s fine? A hackathon doesn’t have to be about creating something revolutionary IMHO. Still LLMs do remove most of t

The effective altruist and longtermist crowd are into it as a religion. They would happily sacrifice anything human to satisfy their dreams of AI. They care way more about what the AI needs than their what their fellow humans need. We will

Why would you ever give the Trump administration the benefit of the doubt after the past 10y? They’ve been more than clear about the fact they want to destroy federal and scientific institutions (other than ICE of course)
