I’m indeed a fleshy human :) What I meant is that I’ve seen people complaining that the negativity towards AI on HN is manufactured and astroturfed. So we have people complaining on both ends of the debate. I would bet that the AI booster s

The article already states that distinction. It doesn’t say that everything is written by AI, the heatmap even has a legend with different colors for “article about ai” and “written by ai”

Why would that be caused by astroturfing? The HN audience is the exact people I would expect to be looking at alternative to mainstream AI providers

> It'd require some kind of ecofascist totalitarian That’s correct and eventually that will have to happen. There aren’t much other actual options. It’s mostly a question of how long that can be avoided. We developed a system that b

We are already in a very bad situation regarding climate change. Do you really think we have the buffer for an increase in percentage points of energy consumption?

It’s far from being only an EU or European issue. It’s not like Europe can by itself do something to avoid the collapse of the Atlantic Gulf Stream.

Correct, yes, aggregate numbers aren’t too meaningful. I mentioned it here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49434170 Though you can also be mad at the industry as a whole, an industry where leaders scream as loud as po

Correct, which is why we went through the initial dotcom bubble, the initial enthusiasm didn’t match the ROI and resulted in a massive resource misallocation. A tiny bit like the AI rollout?

The question is how much is returned to the original source. Given that the water is ~100% evaporated in the case of DCs it’s a genuine and reasonable question to ask

You have to look at the local level, water isn’t distributed the same way around a country as large as the US. Some regions have no water problems while others have a lot of consumption and competition to get access to it

▲
by

It’s more nuanced, the water consumption can be a real local problem. The evaporated water doesn’t necessarily come back to the original source, and if the water supply was already stressed you’re adding even more pressure to it. You have t

They use closed loop systems. That reduces the water consumption on-site, but you still need to move the energy out of the DC, which requires a lot of energy. That extra energy itself is likely produced by upstream power plants evaporating

I’m not a user myself but find it not great for your customers to announce such a change for the next day. Cannot they announce a few days in advance?
