Yes, I think the author meant to say the Web, which is often used to refer to what is built on top of HTTP, HTML etc.

It's a perfect use case for SQLite or similar. It's a low overhead solution (just a library) and you get a lot of benefits out of the box. A text file? Maybe if it's an append only kind of deal.

I'm an autodidact and a big fan of state machines (specifically mealy machines). They can easily be expressed as plain data structures of three layers that map the name of a state to possible inputs/events to the appropriate name

I appreciate your advice, but from a general viewpoint, just adding layers doesn't necessarily lead to interesting complexity. StarCraft Broodwar is an interestingly complex strategy game, not because it has a lot of layers, or even lo

This happens to me with _any_ project if I don't: - set a clear time boundary and a date, typically by estimating chunks of the work, it's better to make wrong estimations than to yak shave the crap out of something for way too lo

My fighter is somewhat wise but not so smart. At least he knows he isn't the smartest, thus he writes everything down in a journal he deems important. He doesn't come up with the most interesting or cunning solutions. But he knows

Thank you for the clarification. I tried to exaggerate my point, but what you say is obviously true and much more nuanced. In fact it's so easy to forget or ignore that we humans were just as smart and creative thousands of years ago a

The word for German in many Slavic regions is something like Njemacki (and similar). Loosely translated it means "Those who cannot speak". Of course, Germans can speak and languages of German descent are just as rich, precise and

The job of administration should always be to _reduce_ the bureaucratic burden of an organization. Think of a small firm that doesn't have a dedicated admin and/or accountant. Leadership and productive workers might constantly be

Getting burned by a hot liquid like coffee can lead to severe injury. But don't underestimate the danger of getting beat to the head. It's very common in popular media, but very dangerous in real life.

With a little bit of effort you can make it work. But I believe Racket has specific language definitions for some of these books so you can follow them more or less seamlessly.

Lisps and nil have a symbiotic relationship, not an adversarial one. They are an everyday falsy value that you program _with_ not around. Nil doesn't signal that you forgot to initialize a value. It simply means stuff like "I don&

1. Unlike Python, Clojure actually is functional and is optimized for it, with persistent immutable data structures and a huge library for functional transformations. You get faster, more expressive code in Clojure than in Python if you’re

Regular cows getting stuck and breaking their legs still happens sometimes except maybe in industrial farming. The cows in the Swiss alps (Wallis) for example are much sturdier and smaller to accommodate for rocky and steep terrain.

If we could create a sentient being, it would be the first evidence of it being possible at all. If this casts doubt in the mind of a believer, then it tells us more about what belief is than anything else.

Apparently much of the usefulness of ChatGPT comes from human guidance via reinforcement learning. The base model seems to be quite useless, but with only a little bit of human input it becomes deceptively smart.

That’s a wasteful approach though. Ideally you want your auth, validation/parsing, routing, db connection etc. all ready to go when a request comes in. There are parts that ought to be stateless and parts that shouldn’t.
