This can be done without the radical switch to modeling everything client-side. I mainly do java web apps with JSP's (which everyone seems to think is stodgy and past its prime) but its rather simple to do something like what you're describ

This is what contracting is for, no one in their right mind with any sort of real experience is going to spend 2 days on-site working for someone for free.

Background checks are nowhere near that accurate, they usually rely on information you, yourself have put out there, they don't have some sort of direct pipeline to your w2 forms.

Obviously a full-scale violent revolution isn't going to happen but I wonder if like-minded people moved to an area / city where they could re-invent the political system there, vote out the police chief (or city council members who appoint

I think cyber-bullying is something that could easily be handled within the portal itself (in this case it always seems to be facebook), why can't kids just be taught if someone starts saying something "mean" they can just block the person

People are doing things, just look at the boycott of GoDaddy, that was effective and got media attention. Obviously its a collective effort, one person, unless they already hold significant power in a company, etc can't do a huge amount. Pe

Part of me is starting to love all these government calls for censorship because I think we may finally be starting to reach the "breaking point" where more of the general population begins to awaken to what a sham these politicians are and

I find this not necessarily true at my company, in fact the oldest people in the engineering department are exclusively developers where the managers tend to be younger or the same age as them. This may depend on region, as well, the area I

I don't work for a startup but just wanted to comment since I work with a lot of older developers, one who must be well into his sixties is rather interesting as, while he does have his spots where he seems a bit stuck in the past, is const

Yep, I was just thinking the same thing. A lot of the "hot" startups are actually in San Francisco itself so may want to take that into account. Beyond Silicon Valley proper there are companies scattered throughout the Bay Area region also.

After dealing with the nonsense from potential employers, recruiters, etc for a little while now I think I've become a bit more seasoned and can spot the BS quickly, this is an important skill to develop so that you don't waste precious tim

keep it minimal, don't list skills that aren't needed, if you don't need someone with 7 years experience don't say you do, etc.. when job ads make it seem like they "want it all" it turns people off, honestly the ones that appeal to me most

if its for web dev, make them do something that has a web UI, give specific contraints and then write an automated integration test for it (such as using selenium), run this on the incoming submissions, only review the ones that pass, this

If you don't mind my asking, I am curious if you got the job also while living remotely or did you live in northern California, got the job and then later moved out of state to work remotely? I'm currently out of state, looking to move back

I agree, its utter nonsense for the most part, it seems some companies just want you to jump through a bunch of hoops and to make you feel stupid. I think having you work on a small contracted project or something related to the business do

Well, this is definitely not entirely accurate. It has Phoenix, AZ as being more expensive than San Jose, CA. Having lived in both places I can say the cost of living in Phoenix is about half that of San Jose so its entirely wrong on that.

I think this may have to do with cultural and geographic distances. U.S. cities, for the most part, may not be as easy to do something like kettling in as most are less dense than U.K. cities and may simply have more open space to cover to

I agree with this for the most part, this is one reason I have fallen in love a bit recently with RAD frameworks, personally I have been using Spring Roo, which is somewhat similar to Ruby on Rails, but for Java, from what I understand. Bas
