I think we do need to have empathy in our dealings with people online, and in general it's in our own best interests to do so. Many open source projects' lifeblood are their communities, and other things being equal, you'll g

Wow, message received HN. Don't make fun of Devops! It doesn't seem that long ago that it was hailed as the silver bullet that eliminates the "throw it over the wall" mentality that causes issues exactly like this one. T

They clearly just need to add Devops. That'll fix everything.

Indeed. And I'm sure you'd work up a sweat doing it. If you want a hot shower afterwards any energy gains would be totally lost in heating the water.

Re: "buried behind a lot of clutter" If your code has a lot of clutter it's usually telling you something about your design. For readability a better way of handling it might be for the function could return a boolean instead

A nice example of this is yoda expressions in, say Java. The initial reasoning for them was to prevent accidental assignment, since a C/C++ compiler will complain on this: if (null = x) but not on this: if (x = null) In Java, neither i

Was there actually a password requirement change? Entering the first 15 chars of my (previously set) longer password actually works. I assumed they were not properly validating (and truncating) the input. In any case this is not confidence

A full throated defense of Eclipse is a difficult proposition, because there's so much very wrong with it. The article is right, getting Eclipse set up on Java 8 is a pain, and poorly documented. But it does work. And for free. With fu

Just wow. Great tips for high performance java. I like the commitment to both speed and correctness. I'm sold on this connection pool. Will be switching from c3p0 to this. I believe I saw a contribution in the commit history from the m

I switched to using the mobile web version of FB on my phone because of this (and made a shortcut to it on the homescreen)... though really it's a losing battle, the real solution is to dump FB altogether. I will say that the app provi

The only thing stopping me from making this switch is that doing arithmetic in the url bar stops working... I use that quite a bit. Is this some deep integration with chrome or can it be made to work with ddg as well?

I've given up any hope of Java ever being considered a sexy language. Its philosophy has been the polar opposite of 'move fast and break things' at least in terms of how the language has evolved. That's been mostly a goo

The first time I heard the word monetize (years ago) I thought it was was silly and pointless. Of course I got used to it over time and now use it myself. Ideate on the other hand I'm not sure I'll ever be able to fully embrace.
