I sense some irony in spending extra time on commute only to put a headset that hides all the surroundings of the open office from you and immerses you in a virtual environment.

BetterDisplay lets you set fractional resolutions for any displays on Mac. While this seems like a compromise, it lets you scale the ui to you preferred size independently of the native resolution. I use my 5k display at 85% which is a bit

If it's purely the question of cost per employee in favor of open office, why don't companies charge for private offices? I hope nobody actually believes that open office is measurably better in any other way.

Looking at this diagrams I wonder if there are any file systems that allow for metadata to be stored on a separate device. For example store data on HDD and metadata on an associated SSD drive. I guess the benefits would not be extraordinar

Apple’s silicon memory is fast only in comparison to consumer CPUs that stagnated for ages with having only 2 memory channels which was fine in 4 core era but wakes no sense at all with modern core counts. Memory scaling on GPUs is much bet

It’s a bit more nuanced than that. Scalar code that does lots of branching and loads one value at a time (e.g. single character) often can’t hit memory at peak bandwidth rate. On the other hand well vectorized code that loads vectors of mul

Good riddance. No matter how much they pushed it was an utter failure that should have never left their research lab.

This generation of ThreadRipper has higher TDP than last generation of EPYC. There is very little difference between EPYC and ThreadRipper of the same generation. There are plenty of workstation style motherboards for EPYC as well (see asro

While comparing server prices it’s useful add 3-4 years of electricity cost of running it mostly idle 24/7. In europe new small power efficient SoC boards often win in such comparison over used socketed systems.
