I think it is an attempt at a different arrangement. Instead of text framed around the images thus making the images the size of quarter the screen, it is the opposite. You get the pictures on all available area, and the text box is partial

The idea is to optimize while keeping the algorithm the same throughout the languages, at least if you want any meaningful comparison. You are comparing languages not different algorithms. +1 for effort though.

One should strive to make c code as portable as possible. Obfuscated does not mean it should be hard to compile.

Maybe you should read the paper conducting exactly such tests, where researchers concluded the energy density is at least one magnitude above conventional sources.
