This is a story about San Francisco. SF has plenty of density for human driven buses to be better for the environment. AVs are not currently competing with human drivers in the use-case you say they'd be best at, they're clogging

I've got a Microsoft Surface Book (3rd gen), and it works great. It works just how you'd expect in any configuration (laptop, tablet, or with the screen mounted backwards). The stylus has fantastic battery life too; I've only

But that distinction isn't relevant to the discussion of instagram ads.

There are different kinds of casual settings. In my social circle, if you criticized someone for calling a magazine a clip, you would be instantly made fun of for being such a pedantic nuisance. A clearly left-leaning media outlet like this

I think some drugs should be legalized (MDMA probably via prescription, LSD and shrooms maybe more broadly, Cannabis' current situation in WA state seems quite reasonable). I don't think there's a contradiction between that a

I don't think this was a secret. I remember reading an article (IIRC in Readers Digest) nearly ~20 years ago which specifically referred to it as a "shotgun method". I wasn't (and still am not) enough of an expert to hav

Yes, but/because many subjects are off-topic here. It's easy to avoid lots of kinds of internet drama if you blanket prohibit the topics. I'm glad this place exists how it is, but it can also be a bit stuffy.

Yep. Similarly, the way I asked my first girlfriend to go steady was some variation of "will you be my 'in a relationship with' on facebook?" A lot can change about your perception of things in 15 years.

I think there's a useful distinction with silent notifications. I think someone would have to be crazy to get a beep or buzz for an incoming email, but a notification dot I can check when I see it won't unduly grab my attention.

You've actually raised a fantastic real example of this in practice. If I post a trollish comment, it'll likely get downvoted and/or flagged/hidden. In plausibly accidental cases, someone might leave a comment saying &qu

Most cows raised in the US are not raised on grazed grass, they're raised on corn and soy. That process is very inefficient when compared to growing plants that we eat directly. And we don't really need an optimal mix of amino

The connection between atmospheric CO2 and warming was actually identified as early as around the year 1900. I wasn't around then to have a sense of the broad social awareness of things, but I've gotten the impression that the sci

I'm saying that the stark difference in those officers' performance vs their usual behavior shows that they usually expect to not be facing armed threats. Society is worse because they usually go into situations thinking "I&#

I chose the wording of "shoot back for a change" very deliberately. Cops act tough and intimidate people who they know can't fight back, but are cowards when society actually needs armed peace-keeping. If the police aren'

What do you mean by "fear of reprisal"? It seemed pretty clear to me that they didn't want to head in for fear of confronting someone who can shoot back for a change.

I would argue that this is actually closer to an open source version of asking an older sibling for help. Or maybe, depending on how you view it, like tricking your younger sibling into doing the boring part for you.
