For a great satire of this tendency see David Macaulay's amazing graphic book Motel of Mysteries[1] where a motel is unburied thousands of years in the future and everything in it is classified as part of some ceremonial burial rite. 1

This reminded me that I used to view images over my dialup connection directly in the terminal by catting the image to pbmtoascii and making my terminal font 1 pixel high. It wasn't exactly pretty but it worked.

"Raking the forest" while a totally viable approach in very specific strategic areas is just way way too expensive and time consuming in the general case. California has like 30 million acres of forest land. Removing brush from a

"You’ll own everything, and it’ll be yours forever." This is overstating it. You cannot "own" a domain name. Domains are essentially rented and eventually (whether on purpose or by accident) your domain name will expire.

This title is a bit click baity. The FBI investigated a potential homicide of an unknown individual based on footage found on a super 8 film camera. Once they were informed that the individual in the film was Trent Reznor and the footage wa

In documentaries I worked on we would tell people what we were doing and ask them if we could talk to them and then get a release afterwards. Not sure about other types of shows.

When I worked in film/tv production we were perpetually getting signed releases from people who were in the shot. Is this just not a thing now? Or is the downside so low that nobody cares?

I wonder if there could be some kind of inland Cajun Navy [1] which operates using trucks and plows or snowmobiles instead of boats for disasters like this. Although given the remoteness and conditions this just might not be possible. [1]

This guy is driving himself like he's a machine. When he feels like giving up he pushes on the gas and forces himself to do it anyway. My take is he needs to loosen up and take a break, maybe rethink his inflexible definition of succes

I have so many but the one I always look back proudly on was non-technical and fairly devious. I was a disaffected middle-schooler. I had lost my science book which I would have to pay for if I didn't find it. I had, however, "pro

This is great and something I do with my kids as well. I’d suggest recording them on your phone (or wherever) for posterity. It’s so much fun to go back and listen to them!

You don’t own a domain name you rent it. If you ever forget to renew it or you are unable to renew it for some reason then it becomes available for anyone else to register. At that point the new owner can receive all your email and potentia

I think people who get their email on their own domain generally consider it as their permanent home and don’t think about what will happen when the domain no longer is registered to them. Using the apartment rental analogy works up to a po

It’s a misnomer to say you can “own” a domain name. You cannot. The better word would be “rent”. Because of that you should think about what could happen if your domain name registration lapses and someone else registers it.

I quit smoking in a similar way. My buddy and I agreed that the first one to smoke a cigarette paid the other one $100. We’re both competitive people and we both actually wanted to quit so it worked for us.

Winnie the Pooh also comes to mind. There was one beautiful and very authentic animated movie followed by two or three terrible films that just felt like a horrible caricature of anything the original work was about.
