Probably not. It would be something that would likely have to be observed over multiple complete orbital cycles and basically somebody basically run into it by accident. By which, of course, the earth in this hypothetical, would be long dea

Except a large portion of revenue does not go to workers, but to shareholders, who pay far less taxes then those who strain their backs in creating said revenue.

Global warming isn't really about heat per se, it's about heat retention. It's the green house gasses reflecting back the latent infrared energy preventing it from escaping to space. Adding more heat doesn't change the e

I don't think the article conflates the two at all, it lists each out separately and in no way implies that they are the same thing, only that they are part of the same problem.

It's not totally off-the-mark. Having a pile of cash in your pocket does not automagically allow one to revolutionize a sector, just ask any VC. But yes, it was a bit overblown.

You link two cherry picked pro-Haskell links as proof that "the world believes that Haskell's is totally practical language"? Good grief.

It gets better. I ate rice/pinto beans for 80% of my meals the first year out of college(I graduated in 2010, not a good time even in the Bay Area, Ca), I defaulted on some bills, my first job sucked and paid like crap and wasn't

Thanks, it was an honest question. I'll look into OBR10. Currently I'm at a small-ish startup and I have ~150 TB of data on a synology nas. It's in 2 raid groups, both raid 6. Seemed safe enough. edit Ah, right. From some r

Well, carbon dioxide's interaction with infrared radiation would be more studied by physics than chemistry. Also, I kind of hate these types of statements. I could say something like, "Anybody that knows anything about music shoul

Exactly, because if it was a purely functional language, they would have started the project, worked on it for a week, blog about it and said purely functional language for a year, then throw it away.

Philosophy is not the right tool to attack AI science, although it has taken itself up to do so. I would sum up my general argument to support this as: "AI has enormous philosophical implications, but philosophical thoughts have very f

I generally feel that solving problems with software is the easy part. Solving in the way that is extensible, maintainable, bug-free as possible, and efficiently is the important part.

Well, to be fair, the OP did not mention the quality or historic import of the new Disney managed Marvel properties, but only their financial and viewership success. I happen to think CGI is the key element to make good comic book movies bu

It doesn't work like that. That type of association is called "Lamarckian" after Jean-Baptiste Lamarck who posited that animals can "pass on characteristics that it acquired during its lifetime to its offspring"[1].

Why not just overhaul TCP? TCP was and is pretty great at what it aims to to do, but it certainly is getting a bit long in the teeth. For one thing, streams are not quite convenient, it'd be great is messages were a first class member
