Damn good observation -- but it begs the question, why can't federated be as frictionless as centralized? Is this a matter of effort, funding and organization, or something more fundamental?

Mine is 64K or so, signed up six months after I had been reading the site when I owned an ISP in Hong Kong. I still read the headlines every day but I haven't looked at a comment thread in years. I'm still quite fond of /. d

I never understood this before reading this post, that the Real secret behind IKEA is the same as Betty Crocker. For those of you from outside of the States or those inside and too young, or have never baked a cake; Betty Crocker was a com

I wouldn't have down voted you. You stated Hancock's position and your post should have been treated as a point of debate. But I agree that Hancock's arguments are pretty much refuted. Occams's Razor -- the archaeologi

I have two large blackboards in my own office in Phnom Penh. I couldn't live without them. There is a shop that makes them out of wood. They aren't nearly as nice as a proper ceramic coated steel chalkboard (they still make thes

Org-mode has very good support for plain text tables -- which can be converted into multiple formats. Org-mode tables are pretty cool, bordering on being a spreadsheet... It's worth watching a demo, even if you never use it. https:&#

I've been doing 80hrs a week a lot longer than you. It can be done, it's not always possible to cut down your hours. But do get out of pressure cookers like SF. I did it for 10 years in Hong Kong, it will kill you. Move to a pl

AFAIK this is not a government program, it's being done by an NGO. I've seen this story pop up a few times in the last months, but after four years in Cambodia I've yet to see one, probably because it's a rural program.

There are a many places in the world where this approach would work and where regulation is not so onerous. Not everyone lives in the United States. And, as your comment seems to indicate, that is a good thing :)
