Not to mention emacs and the REPL. Emacs was my biggest hurdle learning Common Lisp. Learning a language - OK. Learning an editor - OK. Learning both at the same time - Not OK. I don't think light table was around at the time.

Getting the vim portions working in emacs was surprisingly easy. I didn't have a significantly modified vim so there wasn't much to port. Stuff like mapping jj to esc and Y to y$ was simple enough. I don't notice any differen

I think the keywords are "developer community". People aren't going to trust each other if there's no sense of community. Are the people around you friends you haven't met or just plain strangers?

I went through Learn Python the Hard Way years ago when I was a newbie programmer trying to wean off spaghetti php. I recall it didn't explain things thoroughly and often said FIGURE IT OUT YOURSELF HERE'S SOME CODE AND EXERCISES.
