I think if someone is paying to have a letter sent, it should be made of high quality paper and be sent with a high quality envelope.

I'll only send letters to the US, but you can obviously order letters to be sent from anywhere in the world.

Well I just built this for fun, and I will definitely end up in the red overall. How many people would use a physical mailing service like this, if it had an API and lots of options for paper and envelopes?

Well, the dollar breaks down like this: * 10c to paypal * 44c to stamp * 40c for envelope and paper I make about 6c on each letter.

I had a beagleboard (beagleboard.org) sitting around in my closet, so I figured I should do something with it. When you create a letter on Snail, the beagleboard pulls from the heroku database, formats the letter, prints it, and then sends

I find it fascinating that Wolfram Alpha provides absolutely no references for any of its information. The author of the article makes comparisons of the costs of tangible goods to arrive at the 500k number.

I'm not sure, but I think an anechoic chamber is a different, more deprived, experience. I've been in the one at NPS in Monterey, and it's a very strange experience. No echos, no external sounds, no vibrations, still body temp air, and no l

Amazingly, the new iMacs have s-IPS screens, too! So not only are you getting a free Mac, but you're getting a tremendously higher quality display as well. (Actually, I don't think any other LED-backlit IPS screens exist for sale.)

WebOS, with its cards metaphor, is extremely impressive. The Pre is not. When Palm gets the hardware fixed/updated and the software optimized, I think they will have a very good Blackberry/iPhone competitor. The interaction and interface de

I think Japanese is a bad example. If you spoke English and moved to Spain for three months, and you spent an hour or more a day actively attempting to learn the language, you would catch on very quickly.

Netflix "DVD quality" is nowhere near true DVD quality. It also only steams stereo audio.

My initial reaction was negative, especially without the red dot, but it grew on me. I started paying more attention to the content of the comments rather than relying on point bias from the community. But it hasn't been enough time to real

I was kind of enjoying it. Can we try for a week, maybe? Also, the new comment ranking algorithm seems to demote highly ranked comments a bit fast. I can't click the comments link for an article and then read a few good comments immediately

This reminds me of how venture capitalists will sometimes ask founders about their TAM, or "total addressable market". The TAM is basically the amount of money you would make if every single eligible human being on Earth purchased/consumed

Search isn't a business. It's just a technology they developed. If Google hadn't found their advertising business, they would have failed. You don't want Google's search technology because it will make you money. You want it because it has

Not really. Google is an advertising company now. When they started, they had no idea that's what they would become. Search is being leveraged for eyeballs to sell advertising space. Google still does search, but it's business has nothing

Who are you? Why does it seem like you're angry all the time? I pointed out an observation. Your response used the word fuck and then called me lazy, which is extremely rude. Would you have said that to my face? This isn't personal, dude.

Fuck that. Don't you think that reaction is a little bit extreme? Unlike you, apparently, I don't have time to read all 800 comments on all the threads on this site.

You know how sometimes online stores won't tell you the price of something until you add it to your cart? Hacker News feels kind of like that now. Like price, comment score is the best indicator of context, class, and quality. I feel kind o

I do not consider getting a tiny subset of the tech audience using OpenID a case for it being a success. In fact, it did that years ago and has gone nowhere since.

Are you sure you want OpenID to get more exposure? It already failed once due to hideously poor execution and terrible usability problems. Attaching oauth doesn't seem to solve any of the big problems. It just masks them behind a protocol t

I'm confused. Carol Bartz is not stupid nor a bad leader. In the early 1990's, Autodesk was failing. It was unfocused, undefined, and it was easy to see the atrophy of quality in its products. There was no leadership, and the young company
