At the fringes of every fashion era, there have been things that've peeked out into the future and tried to push things forward. As a designer, if you aren't constantly trying to build stuff that's better than what other people think is cur

If you're not a designer, it might be hard to see, but the importance of this work is impossible to overstate. In 10 years, we'll look back on today and think about how barbaric and stupid it was that we didn't have re-flowable text in mult

I know from multiple experiences that this graphic is misleading. Techmeme sometimes sends more traffic than HN; it depends entirely on the slant of the story and on its positions on TM and HN.

That is exactly what he did. Just because it's closed source doesn't mean it's fair to make an identical copy (in the interface and interaction design sense) that is free.

If you precisely replicated the New York Times website and posted one called The Old Vork Times, do you think they wouldn't care? This is not original. You copied my design work.

Pathetic? It perfectly accomplishes my goal: you'll remember it. (Edit: Sigh. Now I remember why I have a rule of not commenting on Hacker News anymore.)

Please don't copy it just yet. I'm still working out the problems and polishing the interactions. When they're all ironed out, I'll open it to the public.

I didn't really custom build it; it's just a normal textarea element with the borders removed and the typography matched to exactly how it's displayed on the blog.

This is exactly what I used to do. It was during my attempts to move ideas.txt into the platform interface that the dual pane system was born.

Really? - Apple bought a semiconductor design company and brought that in-house. - Apple does all software design, hardware design, industrial engineering, etc in house. - Apple develops its own processes for manufacturing their computers (

The M icon in the Markdown Mark was created out of a modified version of the M from Gill Sans Bold (you probably should not try to recreate the mark using Gill Sans because of the modifications to the crotch on the M).

At first glance, the second one might appear to be a better mark. However, if you don't know what it stands for, or that the top part of it is an M, the graphic is just an ordinary arrow. It doesn't accomplish the primary goal of the design

This story appears on Reuters.com with the Reuters layout and Reuters branding. Whether it is syndicated or not, it is Reuters-endorsed content that, in my opinion, should bear the same weight as the Associated Press. It's kind of sad that

Fun fact: Netflix now has almost the same number of subscribers as Comcast (21.67 million versus 22.4 million for Comcast). I find that amazing, because it means Netflix has the same distribution power as a major cable TV provider.

I hadn't really noticed these things until I used Android phones. Since switching, I've become aware of how much thoughtful design went into the boring things I used to take for granted on the iPhone.
