Thanks for this post and everyone's links. I'm just considering a return to Emacs after a run-in with RSI and several years wandering in the TextMate forest. This is very helpful.

This is possible -- I too sold my plane for more than I paid for it, but I'm sure that's just down to luck. I had one annual inspection that cost ~$3K -- it could have cost $750 or $8K -- you just never know what's going to break next, and

"...once you own a plane your running costs are low..." not really. I owned a light-sport plane for ~ two years. It was a great airplane, and cost about $20/hour for fuel to operate (and cruised at about 110 mph). However, the tie-down was

Don't confuse age with enthusiasm for work. I've seen many young 9-5'ers, and plenty of older programmers who work long hours in fun startups because that's what we love to do :-)

Los Altos, CA (Silicon Valley). Several friends and former colleagues of mine have created a new (and funded) startup -- see http://www.wimm.com for a bit of details and job openings. Unfortunately their web site is all Flash (just notice

"In France, firing a printing plant employee is hugely expensive. The gent is paid €50,000 per year, works 32 hours per week and 164 days per year. Firing him costs about €466,000 – that’s a French government estimate..." When I had the u

Not much to tell -- I switched because of price, and have been very happy. Good support, good community, nice docs (e.g. for things like upgrading OS images).
