As a millennial, I never understood CA’s business model. While I was too young to have exposure to the B2B software sales market, they also had a tiny presence in retail software, so I was always confused about what kind of software they ac

The pilot’s self-preservation instincts aren’t the most important reason to have them onboard. It’s that any loss of communication between the ground and the airplane at any point during either procedure would turn it into an uncontrolled c

That “just” is doing some heavy lifting! The car still has to deal with all the normal hazards of the road while pulling over, plus the hazards it is itself creating by acting abnormally.

Takeoff at a commercial airport is a very challenging and potentially dangerous situation. There’s way more margin to abort a landing than a takeoff.

On the happy path, yes. Though I don’t think takeoff is automated yet. Currently we rely very much on the problem solving abilities of human pilots to deal with troublesome situations. Autopilot will disengage in many scenarios.

The new feature here is typed throws, which I referred to as statically typed errors. You’ve always been able to throw a subtype of Error and then dynamically downcast it at runtime, but function signatures were limited to “throws any sub

Some people might be surprised that statically typed errors have arrived so late in Swift’s life. This is because typed errors are a bad default. Without deep consideration, it is easy to design an error type that encodes too much impleme

Let’s look at an analogous situation: a middle-class Brit who buys a home in Spain to retire in. This Briton might speak the language fluently and spend the remaining 15-20 years of their life in Spain, paying taxes and contributing to the

I don’t understand this argument. If the CPU dissipated an equal number of watts of heat energy as it consumed from the wall, there wouldn’t be any energy left to do actual useful work. Isn’t the extra 100W accounted for by things like chan
