It's a specially designed networked filesystem as the storage layer of a hosted postgres DB. From what I've read it has some interesting properties like built-in redundancy, expandable storage, you can instantly spin up replicas a

Seems like it might even be better if yes was rate limited to a couple of lines per second or less. It would be more than enough for its intended use and when users inevitably run it in a shell to see what it does it wouldn't generate

I don't think "pick your battles" is quite fair. I didn't read this as him being stubborn for no reason, at least not in this initial message. He knows Facebook has a reputation as a strong technical team, and since he i

I've never heard of a way to do this without giving all your contacts to the app. Hashing is pretty useless if an attacker steals the DB as the parent pointed out because you can pretty easily build a dictionary of all possible 10-digi

In my building (pretty close to where I work) it would be an extra $1200-$1500 per month to go from 1 to 2 bedrooms. So I'm not sure this math adds up, with the housing crises we've created in cities transportation is just signifi

Interesting that sharding by customer for a sass business is the example of the best use of sharding. That can also go very wrong - what if you get a huge customer that's as big as everyone else combined? You're effectively maxed

But you pay those transaction fees whether or not you use a credit card. I believe there are even laws against charging more for paying with a credit card (beyond just having credit card minimum like you see at delis and mom and pop shops).

Nice concise write-up. Worth also calling out some issues you'll run into though: - docker for mac's osxfs is incredibly slow and makes the cold rails start time even slower than it already is. Docker-sync is a third party tool th

One major thing not mentioned is that apprently not everyone bothered implementing FireWire the same. I never learned the technical reason, but if you bought certain digital audio recording interfaces circa 2007, you learned in the fine pri

If people are making big, irreversible decisions in real-time on slack without a lot of deliberation, that does sound like a problem, but it hardly seems like slack's fault. The same thing could happen over email via several quick repl

The comment in question was in poor taste by mocking victims of hacks for being stupid, and the premise of it was wrong anyway (not understanding that it's the telco customer service at fault more than the people who got hacked). That&

Why doesn't this exist yet? It seems so obvious, so many people get news from Facebook, twitter, Reddit, (and to a lesser extent HN) on an article by article basis. But all news sites delude themselves into thinking they can make these

This will likely be controversial, but IMO both frameworks will "go wrong by default" if your codebase/feature set/team working on it start to get large, and rails is worse. There is no real modularity of features or ser

If you're looking for a good ORM with migrations in python, I highly recommend SQLAlchemy and Alembic, with the web app in Flask (although you could use any web framework, which is a nice benefit of using smaller components like this).
