Isn't the cost of those services also a function of the number of requests? E.g. they bill on a request basis, not an hourly cpu time basis?

This pretty common in the financial trading space. It's usually referred to as kernel bypass. It's how HFT's are able to achieve < 100 microsecond tick to trade response times.

The presence of FIX in their offering indicates the company was built by or is run by someone who has some (possibly dated) understanding of what is going on when it comes to implementing trading systems.

Can your CPU affinity wrappers be used with plain old java threads? Or does it only work with your realtime threads? I briefly inspected Affinity.java and it looks like it just takes the OS's thread ID so this may be fairly straightfor

We have special hardware that syncs our servers to an atomic clock in Colorado. It's about +/- microseconds off. Not sure about sub microsecond tho. Another problem with this is you will run into clock drift and NTP time adjustmen

I think you are right to be fearful. Trust isn't good enough. As our machines become more complicated, formal methods of verification & validation will become necessary for the daily programmer. We cannot trust that it is correct,

It's surprising that they didn't destroy the entire computer to cover up what they were hiding. This seems like a relatively small subset of components to investigate.

I thought of this as well, but more along the lines of protein folding. I think finding a cure for one of those diseases would be more than enough for most people to justify the power consumption.
