Yeah this gets me every time. You can .forEach a NodeList, but can't .map. I usually end up wrapping it in an array and calling map on it like [...theNodeList].map(...)

I just made one of these! I learned Swift to build it. Fast, focused, uses as little memory and CPU as I can manage for a (lightweight) video editor. It's been fun to work a bit closer to the metal than I've been with JS for the l

Yeah this was a tricky decision early on. Going with web tech seemed like the most obvious path to MVP since I've got that experience. I started with doing some proof of concept stuff in Electron + Svelte, but pretty quickly it felt li

Hey HN! I recently launched this app, and I thought HN might find it interesting. I'm primarily a web developer, but I decided to learn Swift and build it as a native app instead of doing it with Electron and a JS framework. The main g

I've been using lazygit [0] for a lot of use cases like this and it's been great. It's a terminal UI with a bunch of shortcuts. In particular, the partial commit is awesome, as is the ease of amending. A couple others mention

I fully agree about the skills gap, but I think the reason behind it is more that server administration has come to feel unapproachable, with an air of "better leave that to the experts", along the same lines as "don't r

I think the size of the business is a big consideration in this whole discussion of free plan vs. not. The examples in this article and the other one are big, established, mostly VC-backed companies. I don't think it's a question

Off topic maybe, but I was surprised to see that this site's RSS feed actually has CSS for styling! I don't think I've ever seen that before. Pretty sure I've only ever seen "This XML file does not appear to have an

Maybe this is just my cynicism shining through, but I'm not sure I trust Google, or really most modern companies, to create something that wouldn't mainly be for their own benefit.

Wait wait. So Google kills off third party cookies, but then creates some new “more private” workaround, perhaps relying on some kind of trusted servers (called “FLEDGE” in the article). And then, who gets to run those servers? Even if it’s

The #await is a Svelte feature that lets you handle promises, and show different content when the promise is unresolved/loading, resolved, or rejected. Check out the demo in the docs: https://svelte.dev/tutorial/aw

I think it's a few things, but the two that seem most apparent are (1) that not that many people know about them, and (2) that they feel like overengineering, too much work, or just too hard when you can just write the code the norma

Author here! I wrote this post last summer after getting a chance to use Robot on a project to manage some complex state, and wanted to write an "intro to state machines" in the context of React. We used it for things like schedul

OP here! Thanks for putting together the Svelte demo. I'm a big fan of Svelte too, and I concur... everything I've tried to build with it so far has felt simple and easy compared to React. FWIW this post wasn't written around

Love it, I think that’s a great approach. Build a bunch of tiny “stupid” things of increasing complexity and before long you’ll step back and realize how much you’ve improved. I trying to instill this in folks as I teach React - rather than

I have an old Folgertech based on the Prusa i3 design. I think it's a bit wonky compared to the newer designs but it seems to work ok. I've been upgrading parts the last few weeks, like adding a BLTouch for bed leveling and proper

I understand where the Redux terminology gets mixed up with React and people believe they're one and the same, but it's totally possible to do React without touching reducers, actions, or Redux. Maybe you mean it's not realis
