If these articles are thought provoking, they could be written about PASCAL and reasonable HN members would upvote it. Someone can be a language snob, but also a computer scientist; computer scientists keep an open mind.

My friend was just about to get DSL from Verizon and selected the "medium" package for $29.99. I asked what they needed the Internet for, and sure enough 1Mbps down / 368Kbps up would have been fine (this was the "small" package for $19.99)

My personal experience: doing without coffee for a day or two has no effect. Also somewhat oddly, there is one particular place I go where I get a `mocha latte' and it wires the hell out of me. (It is a great time for coding.) Not sure why.

How about 4) Have companies advertise their products as facebook.com/product At the very least, people will continue to use facebook to check their friends's updates. Some people use it for more than that, but it just depends. Leaving any s

The hypothetical cannot win. This article spelled out what everyone already had some fuzzy idea about. But there are too many variables to draw any valuable conclusions. Many founders share at least one goal: to get rich. To a lot of firs

Nice work. I'm glad to see someone went ahead with it. It would still make the front page of the site interesting to eventually tie it to karma.

I don't think she was on Mixi -- she's been in USA for the past 6 years. Another one of my Japanese friends is on Mixi, though, and she simply never uses it. Interestingly, she (the girl who uses Mixi) knows the wife of a Japanese official

That's the funny thing: he was speaking Japanese but two of the 3 words he used were borrowed from English. I guess in the end not having been to Japan and knowing few, if any, people who have gone there and seriously studied the language,

I had a phone call with a Japanese friend the other day, and she told me she also quit (deactivated her account) Facebook. Since their traffic is still on the climb, it seems the birth rate is simply outpacing the death rate as we are start

I'm pretty sure YC doesn't have anything to fear. They will likely get the cream of the crop (according to their standards) since the program is well-established, is in the startup capital, and is lead by someone who has provided a wealth o

I wonder if this is a growing trend in regions across the country. Last week there was a post about AlphaLab providing $25K, but it too is a subsidiary of InnovationWorks which offers $100K. http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=550892

I have to agree here. Comments that add no value whatsoever ought to be down voted. At worst, your comment should have been left at 1 point. Personally, I thought it added some intellectual value raising the question "have or has?" And with

That's not true: I've spoken single sentences and Japanese people would tell me, "when you spoke just now I thought you were Japanese." And for what's it's worth, he spoke more than the above (e.g. when he was imitating the instructor).

Would it be too much work to also have a listing of everyone's startup? I've thought about scraping profile pages or simply allowing people to freely add their information. I know TechCrunch has this sort of thing, but there is a lot of clu

It's good to get press, but if your product is in "private beta" like tsumobi then maybe it is time to remove the cloak. Or else how can the free press be effective?

I think the answer is surprisingly few. This makes it hard because you need to have the ganas enough to a) quit b) devote most of your time. On top of that, you need to have a co-founder who is willing to make the same sacrifice. Having a c

It's getting kind of lame being among people who want to divide their attention. I imagine being in the Bay Area I would find at least a few souls willing to spend Friday night programming hard core than carousing.

I agree. This may be a sign that either a restricted scope of HN needs to be enforced, or an algorithm needs to be written to correlate the interests of users. Neither is pretty, but the alternative is a saturated Hacker News.
