Good reference: For most things in econometrics, the publicly available lecture notes by Jeff Wooldridge and Guido Imbens are excellent. I don't recall their GMM notes specifically, but that'd be a good place to start (just google for it).

Oops. I wasn't thinking about macro when I disagreed with your earlier claim. Your explanation sounds consistent with my distant recollection of the field (though I'd also take your word for it.) I shouldn't have disagreed so strongly in t

GMM requires a weights matrix, which implicitly does the same thing as distributional assumptions do in MLE (and you can replicate most MLE models in GMM by appropriate choice of weights matrix)

Gmm's popularity among econometricians isn't motivated by anything related to rational agents. GMM is popular in econometrics because it is a natural expression of IV estimators. IV regressions aren't popular among statisticians or machine

Agreed that fostering relationships with contributors promotes more contributions. But, if someone's first contribution had naive mistakes, and it took more of your time than it saved, I can sympathize with a leader who doesn't try to get s

That's a great question, and I'm afraid I'm not going to do it justice. But the place where I think you see the thermostat concern is in the paragraph: A 1983 study by Lars Peter Hansen of the University of Chicago and Kenneth Singleton o

I don't think there is much doubt that increasing the capital gains tax has serious disadvantages/costs. Ideally, we'd like capital gains taxes to be as low as possible. Similarly, reducing government spending will have serious disadvantag

I think the better question is why are (almost all) economists unaware of basic economic theory? Economists are largely unaware of what you describe as "basic economic theory" because you've defined "basic economic theory" in an unconvent

Personally, my programming involves heavy use of the scientific computing libraries. But my comparison was for general programming that doesn't use these libraries, and which don't rely especially heavily on the standard library.

The reason GSP is in the top 1% (more realistically the top 5 on earth) is that he works so hard at it. Despite his natural gifts, he wouldn't be able to compete at a high level without training... which he did because of his willpower.

I don't think the willpower/training distinction is as clear as his post suggests. If I had more a much stronger desire/willpower than George St. Pierre to excel at fighting, I would train harder than he did... and I would be a better fight

The claim is basically that humans are incapable of manufacturing healthy food. You may disagree with the premise, but the conclusion "food manufactured on a 3d printer will not be healthy" does follow logically from it.
