I don't think an econ PhD is inherently the right thing nor the wrong thing for people. But this post is just a mix of weak arguments and factual incorrect assertions. Regarding point 1, one reason most econ PhD's get jobs is that many adv

As long as people have some use in productivity, and need to work to eat (limiting price elasticity of labor supply on the low end), technology won't produce long-lasting unemployment, just, under ceteris paribus assumptions, long-lasting

Not being a web programmer, I have a naive question: Are many websites running into speed or scalability issues? I see programmers in other areas spend a lot of man-hours optimizing code that isn't a meaningful bottleneck. Is the same thin

Google was on the scene well before 2006. I think that comment was meant to be interpreted as "people still used Yahoo! as late as 2006?"

The extremely widespread use of CPython over PyPy suggests that most users feel differently. Personally, if I had to go without 3rd party modules like numpy and pandas for any length of time, I might just switch to another language.

I agree that you SHOULD normalize/scale data before running neural networks and autoencoders.... and this resolves the units issue in most cases (unless measurements in some units are non-linear functions of measurements in others). But thi

Auto-encoders have some big advantages over PCA, but they suffer the same shortcoming (sensitivity to units of measurement) described in the original post.

Kaggle is pivoting, and they don't intend "making a living on Kaggle" to involve contest winnings. Instead, they are offering a platform for prospective employers can use to contract to highly ranked Kaggle members. And those gigs pay hour

This site sees so many posts saying "I just quit my job, and you should too," and so few that say "I quit my job x years ago, and you should too." Is their dream losing it's luster when it becomes a reality?
