True, but it is my understanding that in those cases they were reimplementing existing services, where the precise requirements are already known. Exploration isn’t for quick-and-dirty programs, but for finding the right solution in a wide

As already stated, one of Rust’s explicit goals is not to have a runtime of any kind. If your program happens to require a garbage collector, and you want to write it in Rust, then you can simply depend on a garbage collector provided by a

There’s a long history of “accidentally” breaking Firefox and other browsers. Can’t explain that by incompetence; it’s clearly quite deliberate.

The hardware they were built on didn’t have those capabilities. The operating system is not capable of imposing these types of restrictions, only the cpu is. The OS just programs the CPU so that it enforces the exact restrictions that the O

Youtube doesn’t know, because the DMCA doesn’t require the complainant to be very specific. The right course of action is to deny the complaint and make a counter complaint to youtube. This forces Youtube to reinstate the video, and forces

I like Phil Eklund’s approach for High Frontier. The manual includes example games with every event and move explained, and the game has a solitaire mode that lets you play by yourself. There are small differences in some of the rules, and

Anything you want to build can be done without using recursive invocations of make. You should probably go ahead and recursively run make when building a dependency that is built with make, but almost any other use is a mistake.

Could be fun :) But note that on the Lisp Machine/Genera, every type has a presentation and can be “printed” to the REPL. This includes any new classes that you create as part of your own programs. It’s not just a small list of standar

This is nice, but a poor substitute for what Genera was doing. You see, Genera knows the actual type of everything that is clickable. When a program needs an input, objects of the wrong type _lose their interactivity_ for the duration. So i

That’s great; I’d forgotten about it. Plus there are a fair few programs that render text by rendering the font into a texture atlas once and then using the GPU to copy from the atlas. Your terminal emulator may be doing this, for example.

Packing things into a GPU texture is probably the #1 most common use. If you played a game today then your computer probably spent some time packing rectangles into rectangles.

I disagree; it looks pretty straight forward to me. I mean, the first thing in the file is an iterator over all addresses on a device that were handed out via SLAAC (as opposed to being manually configured). It makes complete sense to me th

Yea, it’s just encapsulation. Rust gives you some additional tools for achieving it though. Enums are very useful for this, as are the rules for handling shared and mutable references. For some examples, imagine an HTTP server that answers
