Yeah, making a 1 year, 5 year, 10 year, 20 year plan and getting started with it helped a lot for me.

Yeah as long as I have a bunch of grunt work, unnecessary fire drills, canceled projects, 2 AM pages, and low pay I'm a happy camper.

There's also a separate dimension for consuming vs developing. Probably this sits under the category of "too obvious to point out". But still, in large orgs I frequently see wikis that have stuff meant for team members and st

Agreed. Having worked in F# for a few years, I still find encapsulation extremely useful for things like the logging problem discussed in the article. (Another advantage is the ability to specify configurations via IoC frameworks or bespoke

I don't even think it's that different from nuclear. The fact that Iraq had no WMDs (and I have doubts that anybody in the intelligence community really thought they did) got swept under the rug too, after a ton of civilian deaths

Yeah my signing bonus is beans now. Fresh college grads are getting equivalent to what my staff offer has become. Maybe that's partially why coinbase rescinded offers, to avoid the senior engineers from comparing their relative signing

Same. (Actually I'm in the really weird position of: manager quit, M2 out with covid, M3 paternity. M4 is even on vacation this week). I half wonder if forcing every manager to take a three month vacation each year would lead to an inc

Nah, you can always refi if rates go down (after which home values will start going up again), and if rates go up then you can be thankful you have locked in. I never got a house till I had my second kid at age 40. I guess potentially I los

I mean, most of the jobs went to the suburbs in the 90s because of cost and convenience, then boomeranged back to the city for (culture? fun? actually idk why; I liked suburbs better). So, no reason history won't repeat itself.

Sounds like the ideal is to frame the food system after the US medical system. You can't find out what something is going to cost until after you've eaten it. You have to have food consumption insurance to get things at reasonable

I think what's looming feels worse than 2000. 2000 was just a hype bubble of the previous 2-3 years that burst. That actually worked out great for me, as my company just offered unpaid-but-full-benefits sabbaticals. This feels like the

Even with the cost of medicine going through the roof, college kids don't incur a whole lot of medical costs on average. So it's surprising the university would need to spend so much there.

Side note is that if the rule is to have exactly the same number of kids as your mom, then the average asymptotically approaches the woman of the first generation who has the most kids. So the king did better than nothing.

Imagine a population of 2 women, one who has 2 children and one who has 100. Average is 51. Next generation 2 women have 1 child each and 100 women have 99 each, so the average is about 98. Eventually it will go down to zero, but initially

Heroku was magic for hosting college projects of 2010's complexity. The failure wasn't in the prohibitive cost at scale (though that factor didn't help); it was that for most real-world stuff we need IaaS, not PaaS. That has
