Shouldn't that be a browser feature, rather than every website creating their own different implementation?

No, that's not necessarily what /tmp is for. Consider a browser cache. /tmp is not guaranteed to be preserved between program invocations[1]. /var/tmp [2] might be a better place. /var/cache [3] is intended for exactly this kind of thing. U

No, it's annoying when HN submission titles don't clearly state what jurisdiction articles about law apply to. I would personally have the same objection regardless of the article's nationality.

I am intrigued! Please consider adding a screenshot of the iPhone Comments view to either your site or the App Store listing. The Comments interface would be the deciding factor for me - I still haven't found a HN app that gets this right.

Sorry, but I don't think they're giving you free icons to use for your website. The article says Octicons are "a custom icon font for use on GitHub.com and GitHub products". In their companion Making Of post, they answer a question about li

In the US, everyone has pretty much standardized on "the Big Game" as a euphemism to refer to the Super Bowl. This article proposed a euphemism for the London Olympics (although satirically). Seems like a good idea to me.

This is actually an ingenious idea. HTTP content negotiation seems like it would come close to doing this well.

This leads to a wonderful idea: is it possible to make Bash syntax-highlight the Bash code you type at the prompt? I'm guessing the answer is currently "no".

You've expressed an ivory tower viewpoint. Forget the "industry". These people are learning to code for themselves, to scratch their own itches. I encourage you to think less like a software engineer and more like a hacker. These people are

This commit [1] seems to indicate that it's possible to change the font. However, I can't actually figure out a way to do so; ":set guifont" doesn't appear to work. [1]: https://github.com/applidium/Vim/commit/be572d759e857de58453...

The distinction is that, in many peoples' eyes, "shrill" as a personal insult is almost always directed at women. There is a stereotype of a shrill woman.

I'm guessing that it's the other way around; there are qualities that are desirable in a person GP would date that are not found in people who would still be great friends.

Ugh. Rentzsch is a braver person than I. I wonder how many days of backups he keeps. If his drive were to start silently corrupting data again, how long would it take him to figure it out? Even if he did have an extensive archive, hunting t

This project made a lot more sense to me after reading this introductory article: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cs/CosmosUnderHood.aspx In short, it's a way to develop operating systems, rather than being a particular operating system.

Microsoft sued TomTom in 2009 for patent infringement[1]. One aspect of the suit concerned infringement in the implementation of the FAT filesystem in TomTom's Linux-based GPS navigation devices. The two parties eventually settled[2]. [1]
