I think the two scenarios are similar, but in the first case, the employee's ability to leave was de-facto -- of course she can leave any time she wants. That's part of the risk the employer takes. But if you want to balance that equation t

I completely agree that business can be more than just commerce. I actually love my current gig for that very reason. I would love it if companies that value local commerce and community responsibility could co-opt our typical idea of busin

OK, fair enough. But, ethics and nuance aside, I do think the implications in the long run, esp for founders and entrepreneurs who actually need the 'Google Chef' story, will be a simplistic account in the minds of developers that will ma

Hi Jason, thanks for responding. I liked your post, and I appreciate that you didn't coin the term -- 'personal branding' has been around a long time. But the idea of 'Public Rhetoric' has been around far longer, and that's what we're reall

Interesting -- this goes straight to some concerns I had about Zach's whole 'brand' and 'persona' response to the (overblown) controversy on swearing. I agree with most of what Jason says here. But I still have an issue with the notion of m

For all of you trying to parse this on a purely business level and justify Zynga on some ethical or legal distinction between 'vested' and 'unvested', etc., understand this: The take-away lesson, from the standpoint of an experienced develo

I'm pretty disappointed to see a YC founder taking Zynga's point of view on this Joey. You can finesse this however you want, some basic trust has been undermined, and this hurts entrepreneurs like yourself as much as anyone. Good luck on y

The real problem Zynga has created is summed up nicely is this comment from the OP's blog: "Pincus has violated the basic tenant of start up economics and, thus made start ups vastly more risky for people to join. In short he's just ups the

We all edit ourselves and present various versions, but hopefully the personas we create have an integrity beyond an intention to 'brand' ourselves in simple marketing scheme. I like the way you phrased that: 'consistent self'. It's true we

Agreed to some extent, but imo it's not the swearing that distracts as much as the underlying intention to manipulate the audience, and the sense of egoism behind it. F-bombs-away as far as I'm concerned, but don't pretend you're Howard Ste

Swearing doesn't bug me, it's neither here nor there as far as I'm concerned. But the idea that it's being used to carefully craft a 'persona' in order to 'build a brand' is annoying and frankly immature. I have very little patience with th

Yeah, absolutely correct. Fender still makes some good guitars, but a lot of crap as well. G&L has been making sturdy, quality guitars for a reasonable price for a long time. They definitely have the mantle now.

I'd say this is only partially true. These days labels are not, and I would argue should not be the artists' primary target for income. Touring and new media are things artists have control over to a much larger extent and that's where arti
