I originally designed this site so that I could play with _my_ friends, which basically meant I wanted to challenge them via email. As a result, the site is (currently) correspondence rather than account-based. If you want to play with stra

I went back and forth on this. In the end I decided that cursor:pointer was most desirable for links, and that on the board I just wanted the standard cursor. Let me know if you feel strongly...

See my other comment about how I think my site relates to DGS -- I think they are complementary. And can you give me specific reasons that you like DGS better, or is it a case of liking what you're used to?

It depends on your needs. If you need any advanced features, or you want to play for rank, DGS is the place to be. If, on the other hand, you want to casually play games with friends, my site is probably better suited to that. My site has (

This version of Go is played by correspondence. Email or twitter is required. There are no "accounts" on go.davepeck.org -- just people playing the game via their preferred contact mechanism.

Thanks for taking the time to check it out. This was a "weekend hack" for me -- really, two weekends since I implemented Ko enforcement and a few other requested features the weekend after the original code was written. I wrote more about "

Randomized Algorithms is one of those books that frustrated, challenged, and ultimately enlightened me. I have at least one friend who I know worked closely with him and always had kind words to say. A sad loss.

On the AppEngine track, both of Brett's talks ("Building Scalable Complex Apps" and "Offline Processing") are worth watching [when the videos are posted.] I attended the V8 internals talk out of curiosity; it was quite good, too. And for no

Not Evil, but certainly brain-dead stupid. I just watched the Eucalyptus Video ( http://th.ingsmadeoutofotherthin.gs/eucalyptus/ ) and -- judging from that -- Eucalyptus an absolutely stellar example of software craftsmanship.

Interesting. Until reading this, I never stopped to wonder why OpenGL, for example, has GL_UNSIGNED_SHORT_5_6_5 (5 bits for red and blue; six for green) as opposed to some other allocation of 16 bits.

You can examine several AppEngine code bases on github.com. There's something to be learned from all of them. Shameless plug: not that it's at the same scale, but I put together the game of Go as an AppEngine app. You can play it at http:/

At first blush, this looked far cheaper than EC2. But, actually, it's the 2GB Mosso machine (at 12 cents/hour) that's most comparable to the EC2 Small Instance (at 10 cents/hour). The EC2 Small Instance has twice the local storage, but a li

That is hard to stomach. If you're writing, for example, a game and said game has custom interface graphics, you certainly want to version those graphics along with you code. If you don't, it will be difficult to roll back to a working (and

A great improvement, and I love my GitHub free account! But I still can't justify using GitHub for my private source code. I've been coding for quite some time; my personal repository (along with related assets like images and sounds) consu

It would be unwise to "doubt" Bill Gates on any substantive point related to his philanthropy. In the past 5-10 years, he has transformed himself into one of the world's foremost thinkers about this and many other matters.

Ah. I read halfway before I understood what he meant by "cloud." It's now officially an overloaded term, in danger of becoming meaningless like "web 2.0." By cloud, he means all those services where you put your personal data, thoughts, and

Unfortunately, the issue still lurks. Basically, some combination of puts to one of our models would cause queries to return inconsistent results. For example, the query: SELECT * FROM MyModel WHERE property=True would return N results, but

Two weeks ago, my client’s datastore indexes became corrupted. The failure was demonstrably AppEngine's. Attempts to manually rebuild indexes failed. The AppEngine team worked for several days to resolve the problem, which we appreciated. B
