My girlfriend found Pinterest via Ravelry, a knitting social network. Not sure which of the two she spends more time on at the moment, but pretty sure most of her online time is on one or the other. I think Ravelry is an impressive (and, od

(Random aside: I agree with all your arguments against the retina iPad display. That said, I wrote the iOS Artwork Tool, which reads and writes the .artwork files found in iOS SDKs. Last night I updated the tool with iOS5 support and to m

These guys are killing it. Going to bake this in to my next test release of GetCloak for iOS. One feature I'm particularly jazzed about is the logging capture support. It is so painful to explain to test users how to capture logs on iOS!

You might be interested in the Walk Score Transit API. In addition to surfacing a "transit score" for a given area, it also provides a simple RESTful way to get stops and routes at a given lat/lon: http://www.walkscore.com/professional/pub

The AWS APIs are a twisty maze of passages, all [nearly] alike. The management console is okay if you just want an instance or two, but it still strikes me that AWS is best when you want (or need) to automate allocation of cloud services. L

Do you have a sense of how much tuning can reduce costs? We're looking at a ~7x jump in prices for a big app; might we be able to quarter that? Halve it?

One of my clients, whose app sees a decent amount of traffic, is going to go from $510/month to $2070/month _if_ the 50% frontend discount is applied. After the discount lifts, it looks closer to $3300/month. Which, in my opinion, is insane

I saw Firesheep in active use at the TechCrunch Disrupt NYC hackathon earlier this year. Yikes. No solution is perfect, but VPNs seem like the way to go for now. [Shameless Plug] I quit my day job earlier this year and started building htt

Correct. Our iOS app is at its core a vector for generating and installing such profiles -- but with some niceties so you don't have to enter your credentials multiple times, etc.

Yeah, it's a custom frontend on a vanilla OpenVPN binary, so no GPL issues. That said, I'm actually considering what would happen if I went ahead and open-sourced the client anyway. Probably the only truly interesting code there is the Obj-

Shameless plug: my new app and service, Cloak ( https://www.getcloak.com/ ), is a zero-hassle VPN. It's currently in beta for OS X. I'd love feedback from the HN community! Grab the app, enter your Cloak credentials, and you're done. If Clo

We talk of 10x, but the truth is we are rarely confronted with it in our daily lives. Maybe 1.5x, but not 10x. When we do meet 10x, the order of magnitude is so staggering that we attempt to explain it away. Here's another 10x, who happened

Interesting. I'm using DP4 to make sure my app (getcloak.com) is compatible -- I've found DP4 to be quite buggy: Kernel panics not evidently tied to third party drivers, crashes in Safari, plenty of UI glitches etc. Oh, and Ableton Live doe

Voted "other". We're using the App Engine master/slave datastore for getcloak.com. We're moving over to the HRD soon; the role of the HRD in App Engine's future wasn't clear when we started building our app.

I'm not quite sure what point you're making, but I should clarify mine. I wasn't trying to say anything deep. I was just making a _very_ surface observation that, at some level, our brains consume, transform, and produce bits. It's almost t

Let's own up to at least one basic fact: at least some portion of what we do is algorithmic -- computational -- in nature. Why? As we have this discussion, we're absorbing 1s and 0s. And we're spitting them back out in response on the other
