It's worth pointing to Graham Dumpleton's blog [1] -- he seems to be the Python world's web hosting ninja. See the great slide deck [2] from his recent talk on hosting python web apps [3] -- the deck nicely captures the recent state of the

ELB endpoints are domain names, not IP addresses. How would ELB help them "acquire additional IP addresses"?

I think we're actually in agreement about the positive effect of these clauses, at least for some users. I certainly want simplicity and unity in my experience too. We perhaps disagree about the motivations behind the clauses, but without i

It's awful, and it's painful for everyone -- not just those using the DropBox APIs. The origins of these clauses are with iBooks and the Kindle app for iOS. I wrote about it in a recent blog post: http://davepeck.org/2011/11/04/kindle-clau

Heartbreaking and infuriating. My only consolation is that I suspect an epic John Peel torrent will pop up a couple years after the archive goes live. Without the bits, the online 'collection' strikes me a hollow facsimile of the real thing

A great start to what looks to be a promising series of articles. My Walk Score means a lot to me [1]; if you're looking for a new place to live, Walk Score's apartment-finding service is the best tool I know [2]. The commute times feature

Started in 1985, when I was 7, with BASIC on a TI 99/4A. Guess that makes me part of the old guard 'round these parts. ;-) Sad truth: I think that, until I got my TI, I was a normal well-adjusted kid. After the TI: I'm certain I wasn't.

I agree in principle. And I have built a custom CSRF page to help my potential customers out. In practice, lots of my potential users don't even understand that their AdBlock/whatever extensions are mucking about with Cookies in ways that b

Yeah, there are plenty of reasons to do what you're doing that seem fair to me. But at the same time, through no fault of yours, your requests are indistinguishable from potentially malicious ones. The whole thing is a mess, effectively a b

My app's web site is built with Django. I use the built-in CSRF tools. (I should emphasize that my site is strictly HTTPS.) In theory, no normal user will ever fail CSRF checks. In practice, tons of people have complained that they see Djan

To address your point: this might seem like a good idea until you follow it to its logical conclusions. The support burden, especially on smaller developers, would be massive after even a small number of upgrades. Moreover, it's unclear how

Nitpick: EC2 (and AWS) isn't PaaS. It's IaaS. I think this is an important distinction. Most PaaS (like Heroku, App Engine, etc.) takes away the need to play administrator and lets you focus on your code, less your infrastructure. On the ot

I'd suggest reading Lawrence Lessig's new book, "Republic, Lost". It is a deep, sober-minded inspection of the issue of campaign finance. You may arrive at the other end feeling differently than you do now. (It certainly changed my perspect
