Okay, this is probably generalising a little bit but if a programming task doesn’t contain at least some element of “pretty much experimenting”, shouldn’t you be looking at existing tools or libraries? (The nature of the experimentation v

How did "things got shipped nearly every day" work in practice? A common version of this is "the automated tests are passing, therefore it's good to go". But is your project manager actually on board with this, an

It’s interesting that they’re calling this “The Process”. In general, I tend to associate that word with approaches that try to make decision-making more organisational (which tends to mean metrics above all). In this case, it does seem m

A half-way house which could be interesting to explore would be to make advertising “static” again, i.e. all visitors to a given page see the same ads, or at least one of the same ad-rotation with the same probability distribution. The i

A bunch of comments on this post give pretty good advice about what to expect, and if you're in your first commercial job it's probably worth going with the flow. However, one thing I'll add is that it's worth watching

The fact that the duck can work (and pretty clearly it can for many folks) rather makes me question whether the co-workers are as important as some make out... Aside: I’m rather sad Stack Overflow didn’t keep their April 1st rubber duck fea

Are you absolutely certain you’re not following fashion here? To pick your example... yeah, there are some advantages of Git over SVN, and in particular some scenarios where the “distributed” side of DVCS becomes important. On the other h

I agree. I worry about processes like Scrum which put so much emphasis on resolving “blockers”. Being able to spend a couple of days bashing your head against something thorny is a really important part of learning practical knowledge.

Multiple small-ish buildings on a campus can be good too, especially if you can manage some green space between them. The offices-in-cities trend seems to have put an end to this kind of setup, though.

Natural light is good, but the office isn't the place I crave it the most. And as other have alluded to, I'd much rather have a dingy personal cave than a bright but shared space. So #1 perk for me: enough schedule flexibility

John Seymour's self sufficiency books. Haven't been able to put it all into practise, but they opened my eyes to what's possible, and provided some motivation to make the best use of the space we've got.

For example, consider a process, like writing an expense, that is really simple. Because it's simple, it might be tempting not have a specialized person do it and instead having every person do it on the need basis. But then, if it&#x

Having got used to 2560x1440, anything much less than that seems pretty cramped. I'm currently using a (now pretty old) Dell U2711, and it's... adequate. The best I've used to date is one of the more recent 27" iMacs.
