I did, and was pretty successful for it, but it very nearly cost me my marriage and family, so at ~29 I had to change.

To be clear: I’m not saying they’re trying to create a single OS. I’m saying the “Apple knows best” concepts they’re applying to macOS that are seemingly inspired by iOS are very hostile to a large part of their user base.

Ditto. Started with Tiger and this is just so far below the bar for previous releases it’s almost unbearable. The SIP delays alone are bad enough, but the random bugs with Bluetooth, Thunderbolt, and seemingly everything else make it a chor

Slack seems to be unhealthily preoccupied with acting oblivious. It’s fair to say Hangouts is not a Slack competitor. It is _not_ fair to say Teams isn’t. It’s going to become increasingly difficult for IT decision makers to justify managin

We live about an hour east of Raleigh and spend a lot of time there. I was commuting, but now fully remote. It’s a fantastic city. Gives you enough of the city amenities without the big city problems.

Ditto on the VCP5 - both Datacenter and Cloud. It has been interesting to watch VMware evolve from hypervisor to software-defined and now on to this partnership with Google - really smart move to battle Microsoft.

I had major issues with Eero and the Apple Store to the point that I had to get rid of them in favor of TP-link’s Deco system. I really wanted to like it, but no amount of troubleshooting with support or changing DNS could make it work.

Oh man this looks great. Going to give it a try today. I can’t live without containers at this point. So much better than multiple Chrome profiles.

I’ve been thinking a lot about whether the correct way to think about it is more of a “reset” than a “recovery”. So much about what we are doing with the economy right now seems theoretical that it’s hard for me to think about it any other

The vast majority of Windows servers I’ve deployed in Azure are either domain controllers or legacy workloads that a customer wanted to just shift to Azure. Azure Domain Services and Azure AD still have some deployment complexities when com

I’m sorry but saying being laid off via an online meeting with a generous severance package is equivalent to not being “treated as a human being” is a bit rich.

Microsoft has done a good job playing catch up with Office Online and Teams to a point where now it’s pretty much equal with Google. I still prefer Google just because of the interface subtleties, but I can understand the draw to Office for

It’s funny.. I was at Microsoft recently for some meetings and their rooms were Teams integrated. On at least one occasion we had to revert to Hangouts Meet+HDMI in the room to get external people to join simply because Teams wouldn’t work.

I do a few things to try to mitigate this definite risk: * utilize a known unique password + non-SMS based MFA and document the password and backup codes in my password manager * pay for G Suite instead of free. I have been through “lost cr

Hangouts used to be a single product that combined video, voice, direct, and group chats. It was quite good, especially with Google Voice layered in. Google split that in to Meet (video/voice) and Chat (direct/group) in a half-hea

I had this same thought. I had to print out the install guides because I had no WiFi at the time. I failed at the chroot process at one point and ended up nuking a whole install. I learned so much then though that has paid off in my career.

I’m a product manager working on a large distributed platform and spent the weekend trying to deploy the various microservices that make up the platform to a dev machine using Docker. I wasn’t totally successful but had a blast doing it!

I’m not surprised to see this given what has happened to Gizmodo. It used to be one of the few tech sites I’d check daily but it has basically just become a constant stream of global warming and left-wing propaganda that even I, as left lea

I was in this very same situation for several years with a manager who just clearly didn’t have what it took to manage people. He grew, as a result of being on a small team early, to oversee the largest team in the company only to eventuall

I have not, but will check it out. My problem is I love the idea of being able to tinker and get to a super stable, lovable mobile Linux setup, but I just don't have time right now. Maybe someday. :)

I came here to say the same. I do have more issues with macOS than I did, say, 5 years ago. However, the constant Windows update cycle is a nightmare and Linux still can't seem to get battery life and things like Bluetooth (audio inp

This is a refreshing article to see on HN because it’s not the typical clickbait “I did X and my life is changed forever” nor is it “I quit X and I’m better than you for it”. It echoes my personal experience. I’ve gone without social media

My experience is somewhat opposite. I love Linux. I've used it for over a decade in various roles. But it always ends up the same - either some obscure Bluetooth or graphics bug frustrates me to the point I can't stand it anymore,

I’m a happy StandardNotes user and IMO it looks like it’s very similar but StandardNotes is more mature and has more functionality. If anything this might be slightly prettier. This is also double the cost over 5 years.

I agree. Paying 9.99 for 2TB of iCloud storage is an easy pill to swallow when it’s backing up my phone (and photos) automatically. I’ll never understand why Dropbox avoids the smaller tiers for personal accounts. They have to be missing ou
