Nobody else seems to be willing to invest serious funding, including market rates for SWEs, into compelling alternatives. I believe AMD's TC for senior software engineers tops out at 200k in the Bay Area. The problems you generally exp

I can confirm. I’ve had two surfaces and both have had serious failures about 1-2 years into medium usage with no physical damage. Meanwhile, all my Thinkpads and MacBooks still work today.

They don’t get their absurd profit margins by cannibalising their data centre chips. This is like Intel and their refusal to support ECC memory; when AMD does on nearly all Ryzens. — Note: your laptop is probably using a 64-bit memory bus f

I’d wait till the dust settles. Maybe 2bit encoding (-1, 0, 0.5, 1) would be easier to design hardware for; as 0.5 can be a bitwise shift.

Why are they so skimpy on memory capacity? I guess this is a dev kit for anything but LLMs?

I doubt it. Toolkits like TensorRT are specifically optimised, and NVIDIA already segregated their HPC vs gaming dies (and corresponding, die space). The H100s feature a minuscule amount of ROPs and TMUs (mainly for graphics); and doesn’t c

Can play around with the model here: https://replicate.com/01-ai/yi-34b-chat Very slow, but this is unquantized and there's probably a lot of demand.

What’s an easy way to sandbox apps on Windows? Sorry, I’d prefer to stick with my operating system, not install QubesOS.

I’ve tested this. On an iPad it always works in my testing on devices with lots of RAM, unless your app is in split screen mode.

Huh? $1542 of BOM for a relatively low-volume, first-gen product is actually quite low. With volume, scale, and manufacturing improvements, there is certainly room to keep the same quality and parts and get it under $500 BOM. I'm sure.

My pet gripe with AMD and Intel is that their APUs / gaming chips always over-index on CPU performance, and under-index on GPU performance. I get it, it’s a CPU/SoC. But the end users care about FPS. Dedicate more of your die area
