The newbie's statement sounds like a romantic platitude. You should've shown the newbie programmer that programming is the art of abstraction and that there was never a pre-modern era where "we" were all toiling away with omniscient domain

Leaning on the code of other people is something you do very deliberately, and it's a mistake to think that it always saves you time. If you think you're saving yourself from reinventing wheels by adding Yet Another Gem into your gemfile, t

Developers across history have gone through great length to remove pain. <div class="name">{{name}}</div> vs. .name= name That's not laziness. That's just sensible.

Some people like different things than the things you like. I like `abstractions` instead of `tools that let me coexist with clunky things`.

That's a good way of putting it. After half-heartedly learning Zen Coding (aka Emmet), I realized most of the reasons I wanted to learn it were obviated by Haml.

Cool! Until I found easymotion.vim, I was sort of doing a poor man's vim-seek with `/` and two chars.

You seem to be conflating Vim and Terminal. Vim is just one of the many things you can run in a terminal, and just one of the many things you can do with a terminal.

I'm sure they mean `map fg <c-z>` in Vim so that `fg` from Vim lines up with `fg` from shell and you can repeat the same stroke to easily "toggle" Vim.

I've had ; mapped to : forever. Is there a use for `;` I'm missing out on? `;` just seems to be for stuff like "`fp` -- Oh wait, I didn't see all the p's between my cursor and the p I wanted. ; ; ; ;." Now I use easymotion.vim which obviate

I used NERDTree when I was starting Vim, but uninstalling and hating it were essential steps towards Vim nirvana. Because then I found out about ctrlp.vim and :E, two things that makes NERDTree completely useless to me.

Lots of respect to Knockout for making an interactive tutorial one click from its homepage. http://learn.knockoutjs.com/ I didn't really get rolling with Ember until I started to piece it together at a high level looking at Discourse's

One of the necessary features of a forum going forward is a notification system. I ported a vBulletin forum to a custom Rails app, and rolling a notification system is THE feature that inspired me. Meanwhile, on a conventional vBulletin for

The part that's missing is the part where you start your own projects so that you have something to apply the knowledge to. Else you're just reading about surfing and wondering why you don't feel ready to surf yet. Maybe just one more surfi

I think accumulating an initialized variable in an imperative #each loop is decidedly unidiomatic, just something we tend to do until we really embrace things like #map, #partition, #select, #reduce, etc. (And what a glorious day that is!)
