One of the necessary features of a forum going forward is a notification system. I ported a vBulletin forum to a custom Rails app, and rolling a notification system is THE feature that inspired me. Meanwhile, on a conventional vBulletin forum, you're arduously making the rounds to see if anyone is even responding to you. It's hilarious. Definitely one of the things that Discourse gets right!
